Heartburn - help!

I have the worst heartburn I think I have ever had. My doctor did not prescribe anything for heartburn or indigestion. Is there anything that I can take? Or anything that has worked for any of you?

It is my 3rd day on "mushies" - I had 2 ounces of pastina and a tiny piece of watermelon about two hours ago.

I'm still pre-op so maybe one of the more seasoned ppl should tell you, but I would go and buy prilosec.  It's over the counter and will help immensely.  Good Luck...I know your pain!

Try some omeprazole / prilosec.  If that doesn't work, ask for a prescription for Nexium.  It is a miracle for me.

What is pastina?  Some kind of pasta?  Not to be bossy or tell you not to follow your surgeon's eating plan if that is on it, but that sounds mighty carb-y to me.  Go for protein first and steer clear of blatant carbs.  Also, you are pretty early out to be trying fruit.  What sort of guidelines did your surgeon give you?

It's baby pasta. The doctor and NUT told me that in my mushies I should be eating; yogurt, pastina, farina, creamed spinach, scrambled eggs, ricotta cheese, refried beans, string cheese, cottage cheese, and watermelon.

I have to have 3 meals a day - 4 ounces and 2 snacks - 2 ounces plus 64 ounces of a fluid.

I can only handle about 1/2 a scrambled egg - and 2 ounces at the most of any of the other foods.

Yep, 1/2 an egg was it for me, too. Sounds like, other than the awful heartburn, you'd going well. I hope you get it taken care of. It's a bear.

I had bad-ass acid reflux...Tried everything!!! Finally I was prescribed 20mg x 2 a day of Pariet...Worked wonders. But, It was really bad!!!!! Worse then the surgery itself!!

Hope you're feeling better!

i believe my doctor told me i could take prevacid when i started the mushies. personally, i don't have too much of a problem with heartburn so i'm not taking it, but you can try that.

Dr. prescribed an omeprozol (prilosec) daily for 2 months
Then when I complained about a burning feeling, he told me to grab a bottle of maalox.
Works great!

Oh honey I feel your pain. Literally. I was in bad shape from heartburn the first week or two and the dr. said I could take Prilosec OTC. He also prescribed a liquid Carafate, which he said was like Mylanta only a lot better. The Prilosec pills are very small and easy to swallow even that soon. It took about a week for it to work completely but now I have very little heartburn and never use the Carafate. Good luck! It does get better!

My heartburn has been at its worst since the surgery as well.  I'm currently taking 80mg of nexium twice a day and Malox when I have a flair-up mid-day.  I was on 40mg of prilosec twice a day and it wasn't cutting it so he switched me to Nexium.  I have noticed that taking it religiously is helping!! Doesn't really make you want to drink much water or eat much when its acting up though huh?   I've heard it will get better with time and am holding out for that day!! Good luck!

my soft food/mushies were not carb friendly either ... but thats what my plan called for so no worries there!
