Alcohol "feels" different after surgery?
So against all your wonderful and intelligent advice, I had a couple of glasses of white wine last night. I didn't have any physical issues other than it made my stomach feel much, much warmer than I was accustomed to before the surgery!
However, the effects of the alcohol were quite different... it's hard to quantify and explain (especially perhaps only after one time), but it seemed less pleasant then usual... which I suppose is a bittersweet finding. I'll have to think about how to better put it into words, but it was like it had a more physical effect and a less mental effect.
Has anyone else experienced a similar change in how alcohol responds after surgery? And thanks to Jo777 for her description in my last thread.

For me ( i had white and red wine) it made my tummy feel warmer as well. I think that's the alcohol hitting us quicker than before. but other than that i have not felt/taste a difference
I was never a big drinker before and don't plan on being one after, but I guess having it taste less pleasant is an ok thing. will allow you to drink less or maybe not at all. waste of calories anyway

Maybe tonight shoot for 4 glasses of white wine...

I haven't tried it, but don't worry too much. Maybe the difference will make it easier to resist temptation in the future and "spend" the calories on something you enjoy more. I was told in nursing school (oh so long ago) that alcohol metabolizes to fat, so I've avoided it since I started on this path.
Actually, I think you've hit it right there... I'd agree that in this current state, the "temptation" is much less. It's almost like some switch has flipped in my body. I really find this phenonmenon to be very interesting; that's why I wanted to see if anyone else had experienced this change.
I've read a lot about addiction transfer, especially with alcohol, but if anything, my surgery is now making me want less. Which is good.
Yeah, the whole alcohol-to-fat in the liver is a bummer. It's quite true. They should teach basic alcohol metabolism in high school, considering how pervasive it is in our culture.

For me, I didn't start drinking until I was at goal. And, I noticed the "change" you're describing for about the first 3 months of social drinking. Around a year out, I noticed that my body metabolized alcohol quicker, I could drink more with each outing, and I still to this day have never suffered a hangover.
I stick with white wines, and mixed drinks. I really don't have any issues with alcohol at all at this point. Well, apart from the pregnancy, and the fact I haven't drank in nearly 7.5 months because of the pregnancy.
Physically, it took me a few months to figure out how to maintain a good buzz. I'd get drunk quick, and sober up even more quickly. It just pissed me off. So, I had to find a good balance of how fast I drank, how many times I went to the bathroom, how much I danced, etc etc. After about 3-6 months of tweaking my intake and drinking behaviors, I was able to find a good balance.
It just takes time. Not that I'm advocating drinking, I don't want to make it sound like I'm drinking alcohol on a daily basis, but I am a fairly social drinker, and enjoyed tying one on a couple times a month with my girlfriends.
And, I was specifically warned to steer clear of red wines because of the tannins. I was a big red wine drinker before VSG, and I've tried it a few times once I was in maintenance, and that is the only alcohol I have completely lost the taste for. It's more bitter, and overly acidic for my body. But, I have zero issues with white wines, mixed drinks, and some of the more frilly drinks.
