People - a slight rant

I love how everyone and their mother is an expert in the world of weightloss surgery. I didn't tell many people before I had surgery because I didn't want to hear about someones brothers cousins best friends sisters botched surgery, or the fact that someones great uncle 14 times removed lost all his weight and then gained it all back. Now that I am 4 weeks out, I am open about telling people that I had surgery - I have to explain having such a shift in the way I eat anyway, and I am not ashamed of it, in fact, quite the opposite - I am proud that I decided to do this and I came to that decision by myself. I realized I couldn't lose the weight myself, and took action. So how do I politely tell people that I don't care to hear a story about their long lost family member who didn't have the best success with WLS.

Oh and I love being told "well you still have to modify what you eat, and exercise." Oh thanks Doc, I didn't realize that I would need to put some effort into this.. more effort than you will ever know (unless youve had the surgery, of course), because I'm pretty sure that if there was a magic pill to make you lose weight and continue to eat like a pig, I would have taken it (and probably some of you guys).

Ugh - people!!!

Yep! Exactly why I am trying to limit how many ppl I tell. ( I live in a very small town and unfortunately I cannot count on discreet hospital staff...if I could, there would be only my family that would know.)

Funny how the experts seem to come up out of the swamp...I'm still at home after having surgery last week.  Feeling great, thanks!
As far as the "buttinskis" go - since they are so free with their opinions, I am inclined to not feel bad about telling  them I don't want to hear their horror stories. You could mention the extensive education process prior to having surgery, but these lunkheads wouldn't realize what that is. I think the best response might be "thanks" and then give them The Look.
best of luck

My response will be "REALLY ... you mean I have to eat differently AND exercise ... wow my Dr. didn't mention anything like that during the weeks and months of preparation". OR ... REALLY I didn't know that ... where did you get your medical degree and where's your office ... I'm going to refer people to you " LMAAAOOOOO

It astounds me that people who have NEVER had a weight problem always seem to be the experts on how to lose weight! I tell any and everyone ... that overweight people are EXPERTS in the art of weightloss. Just because I'm big doesn't mean I can't tell you verbatim EXACTLY what needs to be done to lose weight. It seems people really believe that if you're overweight the only thing you know is how to lift fork and insert food!

So far no one I talk to had ever heard of the sleeve. So when they start the regain bull**** I say, each surgery is different, did they have  a sleeve? Oh, no? Well none of that applies to me but thanks.

I hear ya except for me it is other doctors that I see.  I have other doctors who just met me but ask am I sure?  Have I tried everything?  Why don't I try the diet/exercise route and eat smaller portions?   And, on and on.

I'm sure he thinks I am taking this very lightly since I made the decision in January and couldn't get in to the dr. until March and am having my surgery in about a week and have undergone how many tests to make sure I can handle it but I'm sure his asking me why I haven't tried other means will turn me around.  I had tried so many other ways and they all failed so now I am doing this.

This isn't an easy decision or one made lightly.  It just kills me that other people think they have the right to counsel you about this when they don't know a tenth of what you have gone through or plan to go through.

Sheesh!

It actually gets worse...in 2 years when you are skinny, all those people come up and ask you for diet tips.  Its like...dude, you said I was going to die and get fat again.  But diet tips?  Come on!  I had 80% of my stomach removed, lived by a strict diet for a year and a half and go to the gym 5 times a week...which part do you want the details to?
