One week out and in ICU

I was at the hospital this morning and the nurse told us a frightening story that is ongoing that I want to share.  Not to freak anyone out but just to bring home how important it is to follow our directions.

A man had the sleeve and all was well.  He attended his one week post op appointment and was told all was well.

He went home and ate some tomato soup and bread.  I assume the bread was the culprit.  He has been in ICU for the last 15 days (intubated)  He is in a very serious way because his sleeve burst.  He should still have been on fluids.

I intend to follow my doc's instructions but I was glad she shared this story as it really brings home hard, just how important it is to not do anything stupid.

Oh wow that is scary.  The bread thing must of been his idea because I can't imagine any doc out there saying bread was ok 1 week post op.  I been wondering if bread was ever a possibility again and would never think of putting anything solid in my sleeve at 1 week.  So now that I have said that I'm all confused about my BP meds again lol.  Kerry

When you say his sleeve "burst" do you mean he had a leak or the whole thing just popped like an overfilled balloon?? I've never heard of one bursting. Are you sure the nurse wasn't exaggerating?

NO his stomach contests poured into his body.  He has septacemia and has been in ICU for the last 15 days.

sleeve "burst"  nurses! gotta love em! "story" is correct tho..I like a good story!! They aren't as frequent anymore ... now that VSGrs are better educated about their procedure n SURGEON's don't LIE as frequently

My favorite tho is the VSG SURGEON in San Francisco recently pulling whole shrimp outta a staple line just post op!  No mea culpa!!
Or the SAME surgeon years ago tellin pre-ops of one of his pt at discharge going to a fast food joint across the street , stuffing himself and bustin open his staple line...that one kills me! No mea culpa!!

That "man"  prolly had a LEAK (CAUSED from surgery) and septic.  No amount of food can put that much pressure on a FULLY SEALED staple line to CAUSE it to "burst"...given anyone can possibly EAT that amount of food just post op, would prolly PUKE first!

I agree tho..NOBODY outta do anythin stupid followin ANY surgery!

This.. more colorful than I would have said it, but regardless- the stories of exploding stomachs are stories.

Thanks for the heads up!. It's really hard for me right now. I'm following my post-op doctor's orders, but it's tough when everywhere I look I see food! ( not really, but it feels that way!) Keeping my eye on the prize. A healthier me!!
Peace & Blessings...

The nurse at my clinic told a story about how a patient ate creamed corn and got it lodged in several places and had to have multiple surgeries in follow up.
