So i have my upper GI on friday and i'm nervous,As i dont know what to expect. Is it going to be painful? Is there anything that i need to do before hand? They didn't really tell me anything,I'm i suppose to be NPO before hand? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Daniel.  Yes, you should be NPO.  There is also often a prep.  I would call the place you are having it tomorrow and ask questions about what they require.  It doesn't hurt.  No worries!

Are you having an upper gi test or an upper endoscopy? An upper gi test should be easy-peasy. Just drink the barium stuff and then they take xrays. I had my endoscopy in July and it was completely painless. I woke up thirsty but that was it. Didn't remember a thing. Only sucky part was the iv. Oh and that I passed out to the sound of "Don't Stop Believin'" so that got stuck in my head all day. lol.  I didn't drink or eat after 10pm the night before. Dr came in and gave me my results while I was still waking up. Super easy.

Hope this helps. :]

If you still have your labret piercing they may make you take it out since they don't want anything that can come out in your mouth (I had to take that and my tongue piercing out), just thought I would warn you so you don't get there and are surprised.

It's super easy though, they give you some good stuff and you just fall out and then you wake up not remembering anything. Your throat may feel a little scratchy, but should not really hurt, and that only lasts a day or two!

Good luck.

They let me leave my eyebrow ring in. :] But ya, mouth piercings have to be removed.

The eyebrow should be find for the endoscopy, but they may ask you to remove it for your actual VSG surgery, tell them you can't and ask them to cover it with tape. They gave me a bit of trouble about it with my nose piercing, but eventually they just put some tape over it and left me alone LOL

You'll be knocked out.. with Versed (offers pain relief AND amnesia) along with Fentynol sp? for pain. You will be fine..sometimes your throat may hurt a little to swallow afterwards..just use cold, icy drinks and you'll be ok..AND.. you may not notice anything at all. I have had 3 done..piece of cake.

They do not want anything in your tummy cuz he'll be looking at it via the scope. Its a very valuable test..offers lots of information as well as rules things out.

Good luck..remember you'll be sleepy afterwards and need a ride home.
