breakdown from my preschooler...
my kiddo had an absolute breakdown tonight when I told him I would be away for a couple days. The most he has ever been apart from me was overnight, TWICE. In his four years, I am the most constant thing in his life and he cried for an hour about missing me. It absolutely broke my heart. He also told me he does not want me skinny because there is more of me to have fun now. :/
Thats hard to deal with but I know I am doing the right thing.

Will you have to be in the hospital for two nights? I was just there for one night, and my four year old had the same reaction.
I actually didn't tell my boys that it was to make mommy skinny. I told them that I had an owie in my tummy that the doctor was going to fix. I actually did have a hiatal hernia repaired, so I felt like I wasn't completely lying. I knew I had to tell them something about surgery, because I wouldn't be able to pick them up, and they both spend a lot of time on my lap and tummy when we're lying down.
All of this also happened in my older son's first week of Kindergarten--sheesh! Honestly, they did just fine without me. My husband came home from the hospital at around 5:00, so that was normal for them, and then my MIL came to the hospital to sit with me so I wasn't alone.
Who will be staying with him? Can you have a special toy that he gets to open from you when you're gone? Also, have you ever read the book "The Kissing Hand"? It's a sweet book about a little raccoon who doesn't want to leave his mommy, and she gives him her kiss in his hand, and he carries it with him.

I looked at your blog. It looks like you feel about your baby boy the way I feel about my two. He will be sad, but it will be okay (especially if he's with Grandma!), and soon he probably won't remember it. These things are hard on a Mama's heart.
