Not progressing to pureed foods
Hi. Well let me tell you guys about today. I was excited because it's time to begin my pureed foods phase. I started today with a bottle of water and for lunch took time to prepare fat free refried beans, a sprinkle of cheddar, blended canned chicken breast, and ricotta cheese. I mixed it all and heated it on the stove. I measured out my NUT's recommended portion size and sat down to eat. Well after about three very small bites of the mixture I was full. I couldn't imagine measuring this small amount. If you can imagine the really small medicine cups from the hospital it wouldn't fill half. I put it up and figured i'd work on it later. Well I made a protein shake a few hours later and sipped slow and filled up after about 3 sips. Then this evening I thought to try and eat my bean mixture for tonight's dinner. Not at all. I think dumping occurred because I ill and dizzy, with vomitting and bm.
Point is...has anyone else been unable to progress to pureed food as directed and when did it subside. I am tight as **** and I meet with the surgeon tomorrow. Any advice?

Your tummy is that tiny because you're still very swollen. It takes a long time to heal.
I stayed on liquids for a longer time than my surgeon's plan. At 6 months I still get over half my calories and much of my protein from shakes - I eat less than 2 oz at a time 3x per day. But I'm content with that, so it works out fine.
Back to sipping my peppermint chocolate shake over ice.

The peppermint chocolate shake is very good - and very easy. To a normal chocolate powder shake I add a half teaspoon of Hershey's Dark Chocolate Cocoa to make it richer, then a few drops of peppermint extract.
You have to play with the peppermint to taste, but start with only a drop or two - too much is, well, too much. Better to start with too little and move up to where you like it.

maybe the mixture was too much all at once for your first day? i started purees today also, and had a few small bites of baby food turkey with broth for lunch. right now i am really full due to adding stuff to my protein shake that i don't normally so i'm debating whether or not to eat something for dinner. my head is saying "yes, try something new to see what you can tolerate". my stomach is saying "i can barely finish the protein shake and still need 10 ounces of water".
try just one ingredient at a time so you can tell which one your sleeve doesn't care for. good luck!

The best advice I ever received was "just because it's on the list doesn't mean it's gonna work". I struggled with moving into thicker purees even though I was 6-7 weeks out by the time I got there.
I would definitely go back to full liquids, and stick with no meats until your swelling goes down more. Beans were really dense for me.

At four weeks out I get a cold, so I have been noticing it is really hard to get my liquids in and eat pureed foods too. So I am backing up some just while I have this cold to try and get more fluids in me. It is hard to get 64 oz of water in wait 30 min prior to eating and not to start drinking until after 1 hr of eating. I have been sleepy from the cold medication and back to work all at the same time, I just couldn't do another day today so called in sick
and I woke took the baby to the babysitter's came home, soaked in a hot bath for 3 hrs then got out and went into my bed and slept for another 2 hrs and this was after having a good night sleep too.
Anyways, yes you can only tolerate a little bit of food at first. Also, I remember reading something Frisco wrote out one day that he didn't even start pureed foods until about 6 weeks out. your stomach is healing, maybe it is not ready for pureed foods yet. I believe they want you to try just one meal your first day, see how well you tolerate it then 2 meals the second day and so on until you can see what you can handle. It is ok to stay on full liquids longer, sounds like you have good restriction going on already or your stomach is too swollen still.

When I began eating purees I did not mix so many ingredients. I began blending beans or lentils, after they were cooked and used the broth to give it a consistency that I could tolerate. To make it flavorful you can use herbs and vegetables such as black pepper, cummin, etc. and you can it the veggies or remove them before you blend them.
Don't expect to eat more than 2-3 spoon fulls at the beginning, wait 15-20 min and then try again with another 2-3 spoons. At the beginning it took me about 1 hour to eat... now I just need 30-40 minutes.
Animal protein feels heavier in the stomach but I noticed that fish and chicken soups are better tolerated than other options. Let the chicken overcoo****i it is very soft because that helps your stomach to tolerate it better.
Good luck and feel better.

A couple of things:
First, the NUT's serving suggestions are usually HUGE, at least in my opinion post-op. Mine recommended 2 ounces when I could only eat 1/2-1 TBSP of food at a time. You cant force it.
Second, chicken breast is usually a no-no food for many of us newly post op. its dry and no matter how much you smother it with, its dry in the stomach. which can make you vomit.
When you can start eating, enjoy the very tight restriction that you have. If it takes a half tablespoon to fill you up, so be it. You dont physically need the food, its more of a mental thing. Keep supplementing with shakes and vitamins in the mean time.
Hugs.
