Saturday morning Zumba...what'd she mean by that?

I had an amazing time at my first Zumba class. I don't know if it was the instructor, the energy of the class or what but I'm addicted. After the class which lasts 55 minutes, which I lasted through, another woman came to me and said how well I did. But how do I not read into that..."we watched you and we're surprised you stayed and kept moving". I just said thanks because maybe i'm overly sensitive and she really was paying me a compliment. Hope I can learn to be proud of my accomplishments and accept compliments because I tend to down play compliments or rebutt them with sarcasm.

I would just take it as encouragement from someone else. Leave it at that. I probably would do the same thing you are but its really just wasted energy. Im sure you have bigger thngs to deal with than picking this apart.

Not too many of us that were morbidly obese could keep up with a Zumba class and a bunch of skinny biotches, so pat yourself on the back and know that you are going to kick even more ass as you lose and get lighter.

Yes, please take as encoragement. As someone who loves group fitness, it's not unusual to see new folks in class who have a really hard time with moves (this is me with most yoga). I know when I see someone I don't know in one of my normal classes, and doing so well, I'll complement in hopes to get them back to class later in the week. Keep up the awesome work!

She may have been looking for a compliment back... you never know what peoples motives are...

I'm sure it was meant as encouragement to stick with it...she was probably a regular to the class...everyone knows zumba is not the easiest dance moves, it's a pretty challenging fitness class & burns a ton of calories...it usually takes awhile to get the hang of it and keep up with the fast pace...

You did well, be proud of yourself....and don't look for negativity...maybe she was trying to make a friend.....many women like group fitness classes to find comaderie...

As an overweight athlete, I always got this kind of comment.  I've bike commuted for 6 years, and one guy said things to me a few times, including "we're all pulling for you."  I kind of wanted to sock him in the nose.  But really, I'm with Sassy.  He meant well and was trying to be encouraging, however sockable he seemed at the time.

I actually chuckled a bit after reading that...it's so strange how others consider us doomed and in the land of the lost. Wow!

I'm sure she was just trying to be encouraging and supportive.  Zumba can be very intimidating the first few times and maybe she thought it might be what you needed.  Maybe on her first day someone gave her a compliment and it helped her a lot and she wanted to pass it on.  Or maybe her first day she needed some encouragment and didn't get any and so she wants to encourage others.  I can't imagine that her motives would have been anything other than good-hearted.

I'm sure it wasn't negative. A lot of first timers don't make it through the whole class. Zumba can be BRUTAL (but fun)! I remember going to my first class, and mind you I was over 500 lbs at the time, and the ones who were regulars were out of breath!
