Arthritis sucks... NSAIDS?!?!?!?!

I had a ton of tests run for some chronic pain issues. (Ive had this issue for years) Blood tests all came back normal so we were able to rule out RA, Lupis and such autoimmune **** but today the xrays came back to show severe arthritis. So far they only xrayed my left knee and right wrist. Left knee was horrid wrist was fine. They wanted me to start a routine of Alieve. I declined due to ulcer concerns. I decided I would do so during flare ups and not do anything super stressful to irritate the arthritis. I was told I could do PT as an ongoing treatment or just when I have a flareup. I decided because of my schedule to only do it when I have a flare up. Anyone else have experince with this and know of any other ways to address the pain?
Thanks friends

I have RA and have pain medication for flares. Fish oil or Flax oil seems to help. You have to take it daily but it does help in the long run.  I am sorry you have to deal with this. I agree - Arthritis Sucks!

I'm so sorry you have to deal with this.  Is it osteo arthritis?  Talk to your surgeon about the aleve.  It may be OK to take with food when you need it. Aspirin is another option, they make a coated version that may be OK for you to take.  Maybe PT could show you exercises to do at home, so you don't need to work appointments into your schedule.

I have this issue, too. DJD in both knees, DDD lower back, possible/probable stenosis (I am too big for an MRI to definitively diagnose, but have all the signs). I did Aleve pre-op, but can't do it on a daily basis, for obvious reasons. I know I'd like narcotic pain relievers too much, so I shouldn't go down that route. PT has helped with stiffness, but not so much pain, and nothing has really helped my back.

I have been able to get by with L-phenylalanine and tylenol. Take the L-phenylalanine in the morning on an empty stomach. I use 1500mg (TwinLab brand) and two extra stregnth tylenol. The amino acid helps the pain relief last longer and also wards off depression. Google it to see the exceptions and cautionary statements but it is really pretty safe. Later in the day I take two more tylenol, not exceeding the max dosage during a 24 hr period. Really most days I just take two and maybe 2 before bed. I suppose you could use it with any pain reliever to extend it but since you wanted to stay away from NSAIDS... try this. Some say DL-phenylalaine but I tried both forms and this one works for me.
BTW I prefer to exercise in the pool because of my arthritis.

I have OA and it was in both knees.  I took Vioxx until it was taken off market then I started on Celebrex.  I also took Osteo BiFlex daily.  I also took a series of 3 shots of SynVisc in both knees.  The SynVisc makes artificial cartilage in the knees and really helped with the pain.  I had to stop taking the Celebrex when I had the sleeve surgery and now that I've lost so much weight, my knees don't hurt at all.  Hope that you can find a way to stop the pain or to lessen the pain.

I got a shot of "turkey comb" - 3 times for one treatment - in my knee and the arthritis pain has ended for me.   Ask Osteo about this type of cushioning option.  Sorry I don't know the real name of the treatment.  It has lasted 2 years so far!!

You are right, this sucks, especially for you as you are so young and have little kid(s).  I have this too in one hand and wrist. I asked my barriatric surgeon which over the counter pain reliever was best for not damaging my sleeve and he said any of them were fine - take with a little food.

I wear padded bicycle gloves for driving which helps me and you can get various over the counter braces and gloves to help wrists.

I also have a home hot wax spa for my hands that just feels good. You can get it at Bed Bath and Beyond for about $30. It would be hard to get your knee in it but could do your wrist.

I also get a cortisone shot in my thumb joint once in awhile. They don't last more than a few months and there are limits on how often you can do it but it sure gives blessed relief for a time.

Phooey on arthritis.    Diane
