Sad, but happy, about new weight goal

Well I've been truckin' along.... Just weighed in at 182 pounds on the scale (gives me a BMI of 26.1).

Realised that I was 12 pounds away from my initial goal to get down to 170 (I'm male, 5'10").  That would put my BMI at 24.4, just inside the 'normal' range.  But I checked myself out pretty throughly - I definitely have more than 12 pounds of fat to lose.

I met with my surgeon today and he agreed, said 160 or 165 would be a good target for me.  (I ended up picking 160 - would give me a BMI of 23).  So I'm a bit sad since I just added another 10 pounds to my ticker process, because I was getting so close... but on the other hand, I'm pretty happy since my surgeon was really pleased with the progress I've made, and I haven't been out 6 months yet.

What do you guys think, realistic?

My goal weight is also a moving target. My PCP would like to see me at 125, I like 135 - so it's 130 for now. We'll see when I get closer.

I'm not an expert, but I think a lot will depend on your build/frame and your muscle mass.  You may get down to 160 and decide you want to go further, or you may decide you'd be happier a few pounds heavier.    I can see how adding some more pounds to lose to your ticker could feel very disheartening.  I always like to focus on the pounds lost rather than the pounds to go for that very reason.  I have no idea if I set a good goal weight.  It was based on my %FAT and build.

No matter what happens, I am so amazed by your success!  That is AMAZING that you are not even 6 months out and you are already even having these kinds of discussions with your doctor.  Even if you didn't lose another pound, I hope you would be proud knowing that your accomplished something really fantastic and significantly improved your health.

I do think your new goal is 100% doable.  Based on the last 6 months, I'm sure you'll get there.  You'll just have to wait to see if the new goal "feels" right to you or if you need to make further adjustments.

Congratulations!

Nutshell:

Awww SleevedLife, thanks for your kind words and support.  I'm kinda proud, actually.  With the exception of my single food vice, I've stuck by my food plan pretty well, even during this crappy food-centered month.  (Small rant:  you can tell your coworkers you had bariatric surgery, and yet, I still received over 7 pounds of chocolates, candies, and baked goods.  SEVEN POUNDS).

I essentially have no muscle mass at the moment - my surgeon got on me today to exercise, so that once I'm down in the 160 area, I would look "sick" - it's a good point.

Realistic.. Just depends on your frame size, and your preference.. I'm planning (hoping?) to blow past my goal to a lower weight.. my first goal was to just get inside "normal." Pu**** as far as you can take it... there is no time limit, it's just between you and your body! I have no doubt you'll do it too..

Awww, thanks Jo. :)

I'm pretty sure you'll end up blowing past yours - your level of dedication is high!

Dr. Cirangle picks low, but realistic goals.  I bet you will hit 160 in short order.  You really have this thing down.  I bet by the time he has his Gala in February, you will have hit goal.  I do hope you are planning on coming to the city for it, it will be great to meet you in person.

Well, if/when he has his party, you bet your ass I'm going to be there. :D  No way I'm missing that for the world!  I want to meet you and JimboVSG and Frisco and everyone else!  I just learned today that at least ten other people at my company have had surgery from Cirangle too (we're a big company, so I have no idea who they are, but I'd love to bump into them).

I honestly don't know about Feb though - my weight loss is slowing down to 7-8 pounds a month, and I wonder if starting to exercise will retard that further.  I'm not predicting failure or anything, I know I'll get there, just could be March ... or even April.  I'd be surprised if it was past that though....

But I like to aim high, and I will aim for Feb. :)
