Hair loss is freaking my out!

I had VSG in August and have done remarkably well.  The best decision that I have ever made.  No complications... I am losing weight without any difficulty.  The only issue is HAIR LOSS.... lots of it.  Seriously, I can roll up a dime sized ball of hair everytime that I wa****  When I dry it with the hair dryer... hair flies all over the bathroom... I thought that once I started and leveled off on my vitamins that it would begin to slow, but it has not.  I take multi-vitamin, calcium, iron, and B12.  I purchased Biotin today to hopefully help.... Any advice?

This is totally normal. Google "telogen effluvium" - ignore the photos though, those are NOT typical but extreme cases.

This is normal. There is NOTHING you can do about it (search here too, it's covered pretty regularly). No shampoos, no vitamins... nothing is really going to help. Just take care of yourself, get your protein, get your vitamins and trust it will stop.

Mine is slowing down a little I think. It started at week 10. I'm 6 months out. I expect it to finally stop all together hopefully by month 8. I cut it into a long a-line bob.

It is what it is.

I will defer to people who have already had the surgery here, but my hair started falling out all kinds when I got Hashimotos.  What has really helped me, not with the loss from the roots, but with the breakage from weak hair was the Chi Keratin mist spray.  I got it on Amazon and my hair has grown about an inch since I started using it a month and a half ago.  Before using it would break off and not grow out at all.  Not promising anything, but its worth a shot :-)!

This is different. Yours was breaking off... this is from the root. If you look at it when it falls out, you will see a white bulb at the end of it... just FYI, don't waste your money buying breakage products. Telogen effluvium is not breakage.

(my opinion)

I started losing my hair about 5 months after my surgery. I lost so much hair that I have to wear it up in a clip. My surgery was 15 months ago and I still have to wear my hair back in a clip. I take all kinds of vitamins and supplements and get about 100 grams of protein but my hair is growing back very slowly. I always had rather thin hair but if I try to wear it down I look like I am sick. I even had someone ask me if I was finished with my cancer treatments yet! It's just something I have to live with. I know it will grow back eventually. At least I have a thin face now and it looks ok back in a clip.

Naw, you're a 4-5 months out, which is when the hairloss is usually the worst for people.

It's great you're looking into vitamins and such, but remember that hair is almost entirely protein - are you getting 80-100 g of protein a day?  That will help reduce the amount as well.

Have faith that it can come back.

My hairloss started right after surgery and was minimal until I hit about 4months post-op. Now I lose literally a handfull each time I was my hair and when brushing hair I shed every where. I can already see new growth around my hairline. I keep telling myself.....it is worth it, it is worth it....lol

IMO there is nothing you can do about hair loss... during my own weightloss my hair seems to go in cycles of losing alot... to none.... then I lose more again... comes in waves.. I do however take Biotin for regrowth... and that is helping.... for I see the new hair coming in ...which is good IMO especially where I have lost some.

I hear ya... I'm one of the very few extreme cases... see my profile if you're up for some scary pics... or, if like me, you need to know what kind of options are out there if you do end up being one of the unlucky worst case ladies like me.

While hairloss has been a HUGE issue for me, I have chosen not to let it be bigger than it needs to be and I am very grateful for my sleeve and the entire process... no regrets :-)

I will say though... 99% of people seem to be just fine... just a blip on the radar.

Too late boobala!! Yer hair converted in August! nuttin ya cam do but QUIT STRESSIN about it ...that's the word on the street anyway ,-) ...Save that Biotin for a few months from now...see more below. No doubt aggravated by POOR NUTRITION...remember...iron if yer menses age ..PROTEIN PROTEIN PROTEIN!! you can do EVERYTHING right...and yer hair STILL will fall out! (IF yer like the majority of us VSGrs anyway!) don't waste yer money on fancy shamppoo systems, hairloss cures ...THEY DO NOT WORK...NOT FOR THIS!!

LAY OFF THE CLIPS....will pull yer hair out n stress it ..EVEN MORE!! use combs wrap it up in a bun if ya like wearing long hair like me... towards the back and pin it. Shampoo ONLY if absolutely necessary! Wear headbands caps whatever! cute wiglets...I like em! pull yer hair back and stick it on...lookin fabulous!!

WLS induced acute telogen effluvium...by 6-7 months out.. IT WILL SLOW DOWN....
tiny new hairs start to sprout...fillin in them grand canyon parts and recedin hairline
by 9 months out...ALL FILLED IN....lookin like little pubes all over da place! BIOTIN IS GREAT to use by 7 months out THE REGROWTH STAGE...its the ONLY TIME BIOTIN IS WORTH A DAMN!...why because it helps replenish NATURAL OILS! will keep that new growth comin in silky shiny and not all FRIED OUT looking!

But ......by 9 months out.....Yer hair is NO LONGER FALLING OUT AT THE ROOT.......because THE BREAKAGE STAGE STARTS!!! many of them hairs that didn't make that first cut! not all but many...PROTECT EM! that's when ya use a GOOD MILD protein shampoo and conditioner to prevent breakage. There's that protein again!

Think about supplementin with Omega 3s as well! We spend more time reading labels on Nioxin bottles, and listening to hairstylists that only know how to SELL US PRODUCTS....than on finding out about this VERY STRESSFUL...but TEMPORARY problem affecting us VSGrs! Like MOST OF US VSGrs....WE LEARN (hopefully) AS WE GO!! ....well all except Frisco..he was born with a VSG!.....lmao!! Hang tight yer ALMOST outta the woods...

btw..MY HAIR DID NOT COMPLETELY STOP...shedding..till I was 13 months post op...around the same time I COMPLETELY STOPPED losing weight! Upsetting you betcha! but as long as you realize THIS TOO SHALL PASS.......that's half the battle! oh and another btw...I NEVER WAS BALD in ALL THAT TIME...I was MENO durin too! HA!! IF anyone here claims they went bald because of VSG related hair loss....SOMETHING ELSE is GOING ON!! For instance... IT is EXTREMELY RARE to have the kind of hair loss like Kanga's. ..Im not sure I understand the facts behind her's. I know she posted about having to wear wigs right after VSG. It is a VERY UNIQUE EXTREME. Don't let that frighten you. IT IS "NOT THE NORM"

I wrote VSG and HAIR LOSS of course...AFTER THE FACT I figured it affected me and others so much...why not research more into it n condense it a bit! Maybe something stimulates ya to expound on..research more yerself.
