Liquids - how do you do it?
VSG on 10/09/12
Honestly, I don't know how you all do it.. 64 oz of liquids a day is like torture for me and I haven't even had the surgery yet! What will become of me after the surgery? I have a Brita filter jug on my desk at work and it takes about 40 oz so I figure if I fill it up twice during the day I can do it. Well, it has been two days now and the water is just sitting in my throat or that's what it feels like and it is almost time to go home and I've been drinking all day long and it just feels terrible. I have been peeing all day and yesterday as well. I NEVER drink that much, ever and can't imagine doing it after surgery either. So how do you do it? I can't be sipping all day long non stop!!! Gotta work, talk to people, go to meetings.. can't be attached permanently to a bottle! And if I can't even do it driking normally, like a glass at a time or so, how am I ever going to do it after?
This is daunting... And is it a one size fits all 64 oz or is a bit below that (like 40!) still OK? Coz in my 'normal' life, I can go on forever without drinking anything ever.. apart from a coffee or a tea now and again and a max of a couple of glasses of water a day and none on some days. And no, I am not dehydrated.
I read about you all having trouble giving up drinking liquids with your meals and I scratch my head.. I NEVER drink with my meals.. always a cup of tea at most AFTER - about an hour or so after.
I know.. I am wierd.. but is this going to be a problem for me?

Well, coming from a big water drinker before and after surgery my prespective is very different but it might help!
I drink over 100oz a day (and always have). I use a 32 oz water bottle and drink 4-5 a day.
I drink a few ounces at a time, not just a sip to get more down faster. I can drink a bottle in about 20 minutes. I don't sip all day. I have a water bottle with me though wherever I go, in the car, meetings, sitting on the couch etc.
I always make sure I drink 2 in the mornings, one before I leave for work.
Maybe for you Crystal light would help. I know some people just don't like water.

No.. not for me. Cold is not my friend. I never get ice with my drinks. Trouble when travelling in the States where everything is on ice!!!! I always forget to tell them to hold the ice and then end up fishing it out.
I am just wondering if the 64 oz is a magic number or if it depends on your body's liquid needs - and if everyone varies. I am 47 and have lived my whole life pretty sure never having consumed 64 oz of liquid in any one day of those 47 years. Will this not be the same after surgery?

Maybe you are a warm liquid person?
The key to getting the water/liquid in, imo is to find the thing that you like to drink. Warm tea (if it's caffeine free) counts toward my liquid.
I love any kind of tea - warm or cold. I have a water bottle that holds 4 cups (32 oz) and I know if I drink 2 of those, I'm good for the day - I always get in more than 80 oz a day. I fill it with caffeine free iced tea that I make at home and I'm good to go.
Just try different things and know that your tastes may change after surgery.

I have no problem with water per se. I like it. Just not that much of it! Chrystal light is fine too. As is tea. I don't like cold liquids much but that's manageable. I am wondering about the 64 oz rule though.. is it absolutely written in stone?
I do IT work so I am up down all around the building. Everytime I come to my office I drink 3-5 swallows. Everytime I sit down a couple more. then everytime I stand up a couple more.
I am currently getting in 64-90oz a day. Sometimes I am below but that has to be a really busy day. I shoot for 40oz @ work then the remainder @ home so I am not up all night peeing.
Good lick and sip sip sip....

You need all of the liquid to help your body handle the increased protein, it helps your kidneys. I sip all day at work and take water to meetings. Just think of it as something you need to do and work on it until it becomes something you are used to, even if you aren't fond of it, like exercise. It will only be a problem for you if you let it be. Talk to your doc about your minimum fluid requirement and see if he can explain it better than I can. Peeing all day is good- removes toxins, and you get exercise walking to the rest room. The old nurses used to say "If you drink right your pee will be white!" It really is worth it when you put all of the rules together and see results.

Makes sense. But I eat lots of protein even now. Probably about the same as what I will be eating post op. I am pretty sure I get in 100 gr. per day now. My kidney tests are just fine so they must be used to me and my aversion to liquids! But yes, I will speak to the doc of course. Just wanted the points of view of experience...
