How does almond milk stack up against skim milk?

I'm not lactose intolerant.....so thats not an issue.  However, I really can't stand most of the protein drinks I've tried unless I mix them with skim milk.

However, I know that carries quite the extra sugar load with it.

So here are the facts (8oz):

Almond Milk, 2g sugar, 1g protein, 40 calories

Fat Free Milk 13g sugar, 8g protein, 90 calories

Is the reduction in carbs and calories in the unsweetened almond milk worth the 7g drop in protein?  I'm not sure.  Taste wise to me there is no difference.

What do you all think?  Oh and calcium isn't an issue.....they both provide 30% RDA per 8oz serving.

EDIT:  Found online a possible compromise....Hood Calorie Countdown.....its got 70 cals, 6g protein, and 4g carbs.

Unsweetened almond milk is thicker and creamier. I like the texture and the flavor better than skim milk. Also, it is lower in calories. I like the shakes so much better. It also says fresh in the fridge much longer than dairy. It is not a protein source but makes up for in the lower calorie and higher calcium (besides you are mixing proteinnin it)

I only buy Almond Breeze Almond Milk for our house.  Mainly because Santa and I are both lactose intolerant...for a few years now.  I'm not a milk drinker at all...but Santa has a glass with each meal and he likes it very much.  I do mix it with my RTD Premier Protein shake every morning and enjoy it with hot and cold cereal...not often but once in a great while.

Just a note....if you cook with it, you may need a bit less that the recipe calls for.

I switched to unsweetened almond milk d/t the high amt of carbs in cow's milk.  The ONLY brand I like is Blue Diamond.  The lack of protein is of zero importance to me since I get mine through food (and the occasional shake).  Also it contains 457mg/calcium compared to 276mg/calcium in cow's milk.  Win-Win if you ask me!   My treat everyday is one cup almond milk/cinnamon (helps regulate blood sugar)/packet of diet hot chocolate.  Good luck!

I never heard of almond milk before I came to OH.  Now I love it.  I use it as my coffee creamer, along with soy slender.  I save up my milk carbs for a Starbucks skinny latte.  Almond Breeze has an almond-coconut flavor now, unsweetened, 45 cal per cup.  Yummy in the coffee.

No.  Cow's milk taste better IMO.  However, many use almond milk with something else (like protein shakes or hot chocolate) so the actual taste is not noticed.  ~Jennifer

Yep, it’s the only milk we use in the house now.  Can’t do protein drinks without it now, just make sure it’s the unsweetened…

I use unsweetened almond milk to mix all my shakes and I love it, can't beat it in the carb/calorie department and it has more body then skim milk so it makes things less watery.

almond milk does nothing for me. I have found that if I put 2 or 3 oz of greek yogurt in my protein shakes I am fuller much longer.  Good luck in finding what works for your body and taste buds.
