As a side note, I avoided alcohol not only for the empty calories, BUT during the rapid weight loss phase our livers are working double time. My thought process was "why task my liver with breaking down booze as well?" I might be a bit more protective of my liver than others, but part of the decision to have my guts altered to lose weight was to gain health. It's great to lose weight, but no way was I going to blow my liver in the process all for the sake of having a drink or few.
That's  my doc's perspective - he does liver transplants in his "spare" time and doesn't want to see any of his bariatric patients coming back for transplants. This issue gets reinforced in the psych eval when you are asked if you can give up alcohol for the year or so it takes to get to goal.

This is a good post - another of the many issues we all face. I didn't drink during weight loss phase except for a wedding and a couple of other such events. So it was a temporary phase and you can think of it as six months out of your life without a drink which is not a big deal in the long run.

If you have a regular ****tail hour in your home maybe you can switch to a fancy tea or something for that relaxation ritual. These days i have a glass of red wine most days which only has about 60 calories but I didn't for all those months.

Its good for all of us to develop the ability to say no to something we enjoy as we are going to have to do this over and over for our who lives  - it doesn't mean never; just not today.    Diane

I think I will just stick to my Cyrstal Light, I don't need the alcohol anyway.

Crystal Light makes some of its mixes with alcoholic flavors - I know they have Mojito and Appletini, and I think the third in the pack is Margarita. Add water and you've got a non-alcoholic version without using any of the sugary mixers for the alcoholic versions. Neither of those 3 is in my top list of alcoholic beverage choices, so they came out a little sweet for my taste, but your mileage may vary. It may be an option for traveling or summer picnics, whatnot.
