Interesting NPR Article: WLS is Not a Magic Pill

I didn't really read anything new in this article except to find out that the UCLA surgical center will not use Lap Band in the physicians' practice-- thought that was an interesting concept.
I also thought it was interesting when they pointed out that the visual tools used in advertising can be a negative thing-- placing more focus on appearance rather than the health benefits of having WLS. I feel that health should definitely be a priority, but our self image is part of our mental health and that definitely plays a part in our life and weight loss efforts.
Other than that just an interesting short read and I always think it's neat to hear about people in the public eye undergoing bariatric procedures.
Anyhow, what do you all think?

I live in Los Angeles and my doc was the one quoted in the article. He always says he only does the surgery, the real work is up to the patient, and the patient has to make it successful. I would have had the lap-band at another hospital, but my insurance made me see him for a consult first. That was my lucky day. He explained very patiently why he won't touch the band except to remove one. He also said if I really wanted the band he was willing to give me a referral to another surgeon. That was my lucky day. I'm so happy I did not get the band! (and I got a high five from Dr. Mehran this week at my 7 month appointment) I was driving through LA today and saw a dozen billboards for the band. The I drove by a strip mall where the" surgery center " was located- kind of shady. Dr. Drew has even been doing radio ads for one group. I wouldn't want to go to a surgeon who needs to advertise so aggressively.
