60%
The limited studies that are available for the sleeve show that the average long-term (5 year?) weight loss is 60-70% or thereabouts. That's where surgeons get that from.
Lots of sleevers here have lost way more than that, up to and including 100% of their excess weight. It's very possible.
I personally have lost 97% of my excess weight already and I am just shy of 8 months post op. I intend to lose 100+% of my excess weight when it's all said and done. Then, it's onto maintaining that weight, which will be the real test.
You ask a great question... what is needed to get there? Spend time here understanding what the most successful sleevers have done. I follow a very common plan that many sleevers use (although not everyone, just most).
600-800 calories per day
at least 64 oz fluids per day
at least 70g protein per day
less than 40g carbs per day
exercise 4-6 times per week for 30-60 minutes each time
This sounds really tough and without surgery, it would be almost impossible to keep calories that low. But the beauty of the sleeve is that it's possible and lots of people do it. It requires your commitment to tracking your food and managing your intake. And compliance to the plan.
Keep reading and researching! Make the best choice for you!
I love my sleeve!

5'5" Goal reached, but fighting regain. Back to Basics.

60% for me would have been 102lbs... but that's figuring my ideal weight at 145 which I don't think is possible on my frame... I would be PSYCHED with 160, which would put me just barely at a normal BMI...
I have lost 130+ so far and still am working on loosing, though it is much more of a struggle now, mostly due to my emotional eating, which I am working on.... I am 7 month out...
I do think that the sleeve is more work than RNY in the first 2 years, but then it equals out as you loose the malabsorbtion from RNY but are still left with all of the anatomical changes and lack of vitamin absorption...
It is a tool for sure... but MANY Of us are proof that you can totally breal the 60% rule!

I'm at exactly 90% now. But I'm past my goal weight and still losing.
RNY "averages" are not that much higher than 60%. Patients who put a lot into the journey get a lot out, with either surgery.

175+ lbs lost, maintaining since February 2012
Thank you everyone!! I know it's going to sound crazy coming from someone my size, but I LOVE to exercise, so I'm very, very stoked to get this surgery where I can lose weight and get to the point where I can hard core exercise again w/out feeling like I'm going to die! You're all an inspiration! Thanks again!
