Does anyone have sugar and cream with their coffee?
I would say, you will need to change the habits that got you in trouble if you want to have a different outcome than you have now.
But more importantly, it's not the Army, you don't *have to* change anything. There are people who drink sugared sodas after WLS, carbs, sweets and all that. They just might not have very good outcomes! If we're going to do the same things with food after surgery as we did before, well, why bother?
One tsp of sugar is 16 cal and one oz of Coffeemate is 40 cal. That's 56 cal a cup, and 56 calories can be built into a food plan. But if you drink 2 or 3 cups of coffee a day, then that's 100-150 calories with almost no nutritional value. That's some serious food in post-VSG world. I'd rather eat my calories.
Finally, I prefer to think "I chose to not drink sodas." "I chose to abstain from recreational sugar." "I choose to weigh, measure and record my food." "I chose to follow a food plan because it helps me fee sane about food." I don't have to - nobody's making me. Nobody's going to make you either. The more I feel this is my *choice*, the easier it is for me.
Good luck!!
Hi Happy!
I love your perceptive and advice. It helped me to see my weight loss journey and eventually maintenance program in a much more reasonable and simply way.
Thank you so much!

Thank you for all of the responses. Yes-I do just have 1 cup per day and I sooo look forward to it. It is part of my morning ritual to just sit on the couch with my cup of coffee and just enjoy the peace and quiet for about 20 minutes before I hit the ground running. It's about the only time of day that is just for me (since I'm a mom to two children and work full-time).
But that is so interesting to note how some of your tastes have changed. I hope that works in my favor! :)
Thanks again!

I agree, it's all about choices. I too LOVE my wuiet mornings with my coffee. I drink a couple big mugs before hitting the gym, and then off to work. I do use half and half in my coffee. Never more than a tablespoon or so in a big mug full. It's my splurge. No sugar though. Never did like sweet drinks, never drank soda or sweetened drinks with the exception of a lemonade on a really hot day at the fair or amusement park.....
I was a pepsi-holic but made myself switch to diet pepsi and after the 3rd day could not go back to a regular pepsi, too sweet. I also drink several cups of coffee a day but changed from sugar and coffeemate to splenda and low-fat vanilla coffeemate, it is sweeter and very good. I know I'll have to give up the diet pepsi but I've also started drinking unsweet tea with splenda and that works good for me now. The first few days of change are the hardest, after that it's pretty easy. I also used Unjury vanilla protein mix in with my coffee last weekend and it was very good. Did not have a protein taste at all.
I use unsweetened almond milk which is low carb, cal and fat and has protein, and lots of vitamins like E. 1 cup is 40 or 60 calories.. can't remember which.
I buy it in large quantities in both refrigerated and shelf versions, because I drink a lot of coffee.. one of my biggest vices. I drink about 48 oz per day, so I need my coffee to really be low carb/cal since I drink so much of it (I know, bad).
I sweeten it with NOW brand Stevia which works great for me.
