Why are a lot of people against the band?

A couple of years ago I was all set to have the Lap Band done but I never followed through with the appointments and such and then had to go to another information meeting where they introduced the VGS to me and I knew it was what I wanted. While I don't want the band, I'm just curious why there are quite a few people who don't like it?

- Highest rate of post-surgery complication
- Lowest rate of weight loss success
- The band is not a "lifetime" device and is not rated to remain in your body indefinitely - you will be having a surgery to remove it later when it causes organ damage, fails, or becomes infected.
- When it is removed, weight regain is immediate.
So I think of lap band as three surgeries - one surgery to put it in, a second to pull it out, and a third to revise to another WLS.
After I learned that, I ran far, far away.

And don't forget the countless endoscopy's to "diagnose your problem", about a million x-rays, and at least three or four upper GI's, and several CT scans (and those put such LOVELY things into your body each time you have one, I would love to have several more now! *end sarcasm*).
So all the hooey about it being "less invasive" is total crap, b/c they had to invade my body on at least 14 occasions with drugs, surgical devices and radiation while I was slowly dying from my complications.

My mom had lap-band surgery October 2010, and has only lost about 50 lbs to date. I had VSG surgery August 2011, and am down nearly 85 lbs to date.
She struggles with eating the right things, because she has sliming/vomiting with many foods or if she eats too fast. She doesn't get enough protein and sometimes resorts to sliders because she has difficulty getting other things down.
She's talked to her surgeon about VSG, and she has to have the band for at least 2 years before they will start talking about revision. While she hasn't had any significant issues with the band (health-related issues), she's concerned about longevity and may revise to the sleeve when she's able to, and if insurance will cover it.

About the 2 year wait......has your mom had an upper GI lately? One lady posted on the band forum a day or 2 ago that she had NO symptoms at all, but had a routine UGI and discovered she had esophageal damage at just 2 years out. Tell your mom to request a UGI, if there is some damage that she is yet unaware of, she can revise before her 2 year mark.
Good luck !

I had my lap and put in Aug 2009. I lost 65lbs in the first 6months and nothing after. I begin having troubles with it and had to have ALL the fluid taking out and I still vmit up everything I eat and I constantly gain weight, which makes no sense since i can barely eat. I am scheduleules for the sleeve next month because the band has caused severe esophagus problems and heart burn so bad that i cant sleep at night. I am sure everyone is effected differently as for me it was the worst mistake in my life. I am ready for the sleeve and have learned i wont have as many issues......

Have you joined the failed band groups yet?
