Ah Jackie, ask me anything about gardening and I'm your best friend, lol.

Asparagus, hmmm, well I start with 3 year crowns (roots) because you can just plant and bury in the ground without having to cover with dirt a little at a time. I plant in the spring in the North East cuz its warmer (for me lol)
Then you can harvest A FEW that year, maybe for a week or two tops. Then you let it go to seed (ferns about 5 feet tall that are really pretty)
Then you cut them down when it snows for the first time and wait till they start coming up again in the spring.
Mulch em and eat them for a week or three and repeat.
never eat them for more than 5 weeks or so cuz they need the spears to make roots/spears for next year,.

Thats it!

Congrats on the asparagus bed, ouch on the sunburn, and thanks for the asparagus info!  I'm only now beginning to garden and while I'm loving it, I'm having some issues with pests eating my young tender leaves.  Out, out, damned pests!

I cover my young stuff with a "row cover" which is nothing more than a really shear piece of cloth that the sun and water can get through but no bugs. Usuallhy take it off in June or so, after bugs are either gone or gave up LOL.
Works great for squash, lettuce etc.

ok ya lost me with the ferns because I just wanted to know about esparagus lol do they grow 5ft? I just know esparagus are expensive here but do watch for when they go on sale. I guess I should google some stuff. I know romaine lettuce and spinach are so easy to grow. I am not a gardener haha I have to go with the easy stuff.

Asparagus are ferns...If you don't pick/cut them when they are little. They grown about 5 feet tall.

You'll be able to eat a little when the time comes, lol.
Last year I had surgery in August, after all the planting but before the harvest. I couldn't eat ANYTHING. Gave most of it away and froze the rest.
Lost it all in the October snowstorm when the power went out for a week.
