I know it is recommended that RNY patients wear a medical alert bracelet or tag but what about sleevers? I don't think it would be as necessary since a scope can still enter our intestines through the stomach normally, but has anyone had it recommended to them by their surgeon or other doctor?

The surgical nurse( who is also a RNYpatient) who runs my support group recommends them for all bariatric patients post op; apparently regardless of procedure we all have digestive tracts that have been altered in some way and in case of emergency EMS technicians(who are specially trained to look for medical alert jewelry, as are doctors) need to know this since regular instruments cannot be used on us. My surgeon also recommends them for all post bariatric surgery patients- and remember that there ay be some medications or dosages that may have to be altered or substituted due to our surgery. Definitely something to be aware of and think about.

I bought one from here:    http://www.stickyj.com/medical-emergency.html

Braclets, anklets, charms and more.

I put this on mine:

Sleeve Gastrectomy
No Blind NG Tube
No NSAIDS
No Penicillin

Not really sure why you would need one.

Blind NG tubes are fine with a sleeve....that is an RNY precaution.

We can also have NSAIDS.

I've found many docs just give blanket after care instructions based on RNY rather than changing them to be sleeve specific.

The outdated info above about no NSAIDS or no NG tube are examples.

In defense of my surgeon ... the wordings on the medical alert jewelry were my own based on internet research.

An example of I shouldn't believe everything I read on the internet.  =)
