Why is Drinking While Eating Not Allowed?

What exactly is the reason we're not supposed to drink while eating? Is it because the sleeve will fill up before being able to eat the meal? I'm 2 mths post op, totally forgot about this rule, therefore never followed it, and don't have any problems getting in my meal. Grant it, I only sip, so maybe this is OK??? Is there another reason????

If you click on this link it will explain it.  It has to do with your Pyloric Valve.

The main reason is because liquid washes your food thru your sleeve too quickly, so you might eat more.  Also, it can give you a feeling of fullness, and you won't have room for the protein you desperately need.  DO follow this rule; I'm 3 1/2 years out and never broke it til a couple of months ago, and it's a slippery slope.  Trying to break that bad habit now.

I'm sure many other vets can explain it better....but here it goes.

Your sleeve is like a drain.....with the pylorus valve stopping it up at the bottom.  If you eat food (particularly dense protein) the valve closes and it fills up your sleeve.  This makes you satisfied/full and you stop eating.

If you drink while eating.....that valve stays open and some of the food runs right through you and you end up eating much more than you require.

A small sip might be ok but you really need to stop drinking while eating.

Not only can drinking while eating cause you to eat more, but for some of us it can make us very sick.

Last week, in fact, I had some string cheese, and I thought I had waited long enough before drinking when I was finished eating... apparently not. Within minutes I was finding a trash can to puke into.

Having said that, my husband, who is 16 months out from his vsg, can eat and drink at the same time without making him sick, but I do notice that he eats considerably more than I do. I may try and talk him into going back to not drinking while eating to see if it helps him to feel full sooner.

i was told that it can cause the stomach to stretch.

i was told by Dr. So to wait 20 minutes after drinking before eating, and to wait an hour after eating before drinking.

i have found that i have to wait 2 hours after eating before drinking as my stomach empties really slow and it is nauseating to drink fluid with food in my stomach.

Keeping drinking and eating separate is an excellent practice because it automatically limits your intake of calories because of the time lapses.  It is also better for digestion.

I actually tested the theory at a buffet I occasionally go to (Im 3 years post op). One time I drank water and the other time I didnt. I took pictures to compare and I was literally able to eat twice as much when I drank water.

Whats funny is people always used to say "drink water with your meals to fill up." Well...when I weighed almost 250 pounds I used to drink 4 or 5 glasses of water with my meals. Now I see that I was actually making it so I could eat more! Crazy diet advice that circulates.

Similar to what others have said, but...

Imagine your garbage disposal.  Fill the sink with chicken, turn on the disposal.  The chicken won't go anywhere.

Now, turn on the water and the disposal and see how fast the chicken goes down the drain.
