alcohol after VSG

I am going on a girls weekend - no kids, yay! - in the middle of July and I would kind of sorta like to have one drink. I haven't had a drink at all since before my surgery. And by a drink I mean like a vodka cranberry or something like that...not a big sugary margarita or anything.

But I really don't want to mess up the weightloss I have going on right now. I realize it might be a risk...but I was just curious if anyone had seen a dramatic slow down in weight loss after one drink during weightloss?

I don't know if I will do it, but I want to go prepared and not blindsided by the urge to have a drink. My original intention was not to have a drink for a year so as not to mess with anything. Perhaps it would be best if I stick to this...just weighing the options here for a minute.

Thanks!

I'd say if you told yourself you would wait a year, wait a year. 3-4 months is a little soon and with how alcohol effects VSG patients, may be best to wait it out and take it slow when you do.

I understand that it's not the answer you would like, but in truth, I would wait a minimum of six months before having alcohol, one year is better, three months is a bit too soon.  Having said this, if you really, really can't wait, have a 1/2 glass of red wine and see how you do.  I would wait if at all possible.

Thank you...for your wisdom...I think I am going to wait. Just the very replies on here have really reminded me. I am going with five friends - none of which has ever had weight issues, let alone obesity problems or whatever. I just needed to hear from others who have been there, done that. Thanks!

It's little choices and decisions along the way like the one you just made that make you and all of us heroes in my eyes.  It takes guts and inspiration, commitment and personal integrity to walk this walk.  YOU are walking it and the walk itself with change you and take to places that you never even imagined before surgery.  You will not only be thinner and healthier, you will be wiser and stronger.  You will find that you learn to advocate for yourself and respect yourself and take yourself seriously.  It's a great journey, I am proud to be on it with you.

I love this too! I have already seen glimpses of these changes in me...especially taking me seriously. I have been working on (prior to surgery even...in preparation with my counselor) with even finding the self in me...I have spent my life being defined by my cir****tances, situations, what others say, and the "oh-I-should-be_______" attitude for my entire life. I am finally really learning who I am and how to be strong enough to be okay with me - because that is how God made me...not b/c anyone else says I should be or am something else.

I have always hidden behind the funny, silly, even ridiculous fat girl persona...don't get me wrong, I am still funny and ridiculous at times...but I have a very serious side about me and passions that I don't have to run from.

Learning to be okay with and even stand strong in who I am - even with a group - is still a work in progress for me. I am so glad to be on this journey with you too! Thank you for your encouragement!

Alcohol during weight loss is not advised.  A few things are going on:

1.  Is this a healthy food choice?  Alcohol is all empty calories.  8 ounces of a vodka cranberry ****tail has 172 calories and 16 g of sugar.  Thats a huge percentage of your daily diet.  Thats a meal with not one gram of protein - in an 8 ounce drink.

2.  Alcohol is going to hit you faster.  You don't have a big stomach for it to wait around in anymore.  Its gonna go straight through and hit your small intestine and absorb.

Focus on having fun with your girlfriends.  If you need the alcohol to have fun, maybe find another activity or look at why you cant enjoy them without booze.

Good point on the healthy food choice question...for whatever reason I hadn't thought about it in that way...even though I do it with virtually everything else!

Thanks! None of my friends have had the weight issues that I deal with so I maybe I just needed some reaffirmation that I am on the right path to wait longer. Thanks!

I'm afraid I have to echo everyone else. Not wise at this point in your recovery from surgery. However, if you must, please get your surgeon's permission prior to imbibing! Better safe than sorry.
