Ok help me out here... My mom had a full hysterectomy a couple weeks ago by laproscopy. Now she came home a couple days after. Since she was home she quickly declined and yesterday we called 911 and she is now in ICU unresponsive and was diagnosed with Sepsis! I had no idea really what that was. So when I came home, I stupidly looked it up on the internet and I am terrified!!! I am due to be sleeved in August but now I am freaked out to get the surgery. What would you do?????

I would pray for my mom (and in fact, I am praying for yours).  Then I would remember that the odds of your suffering a similar complication are very slim and go ahead as planned.

I hope that your mom makes a quick and complete recovery.

First, I hope that your mom starts getting better soon. My dad had Sepsis three different times, and it is serious.

You can get Sepsis from a lot of things, but when the risk of getting it by surgery is pretty low.

I am so sorry to hear about your mom. Sepsis while also trying to recover from a MAJOR surgery like a full hysterectomy is no walk in the park. I'm sending healthy vibes her way.

Don't be terrified though. Sepsis in laproscopic surgeries in general is statistically rare. The risk is higher in certain procedures, including hysterectomies.

Is it a risk in bariatric surgery? Of course. I would imagine, having take a cursory look at some statistics, that in a VSG procedure you have a great chance of nicking the liver than of developing sepsis.

Talk to your doctor about your worries. You can also review statistics of post-op infection rates at the hospital you'll be at. Just Google "post operative infection rates at xxx" xxx = your hospital.

That is awful news about your mom and I really hope she gets better soon. I would talk to my surgeon about my concerns and you should too. All surgeries carry risk and you should be fully informed before you hit the OR.

Sorry to hear about your mom. My mom is 6 weeks post op from her hysterectomy. She too returned to the hospital after being discharged - she developed clots in her lungs. I too changed my mind for about 2 weeks. My mom is still on coumadin and is getting better each day. We had a nice heart to heart and I've decided to go forward on July 24th with my sleeve. I also agree with previous posts. Speak to your surgeon.
