I am in round 3 of getting approved from BCBS of IL and they came back saying that one of my documents was not sufficient. They now what a document from the surgeon stating that they met with me and I agreed to either Weigh****chers or Curves, something like that to help in the nutrition and exercise plans. (So that is another hour and a half off of work).

The frustrating part, the nurse said she just had another pateint with the same insurance get approved with the SAME document I first signed. So why me? Why do I have to jump through hoops?

If I get this done and they FINALLY approve me, then I am still looking at late August early September for the surgery. Oh the waiting is driving me crazy!! (Sorry for the rant)

Rant away, it can be very frustrating when you have done everything. Don't let this get you down look how far you've come.
Good luck keep us posted!

wait...Im not sure if I understand...is this a medically supervised diet BEFORE surgery...or in adjunct to POST surgery....its gotta be a medically supervised diet....because I don't know how on earth an insurnace company can mandate this AFTER VSG.

Ya really need to check into this Neib....don't settle. Call yer compnay and speak with a supervisor. Get names

Sides....BCBS IL....NO LONGER has medically supervised diets....I posted thins in last decenber? to the IL state forum board these changes to BCBS IL. If I remember right it went into effect Jan 1 2012.

They want a document that says I met with the surgeon and agree to do weigh****chers or curves AFTER surgery. I don't actually have to, just document to them I will.

OMG Nieb....I can't f-n believe this....I would think this is reportable to your State's Insurance Commission, and State Managed Health care dept..  You already had a mandated by NIH pre-bariatric psych eval....that 'determines/includes your ability to  utilize resources in the event you get your self in trouble'.....now you insurance co. is mandating this for you....insane.

yeah have your surgeons office fax that to em... call and make sure ins. has received it. Note dates, and names. Get it and be done! you won't have to jump another absurd hoop like this ever again!

strike that.....you bein a Cali transplant....may have ins. problems come time for plastic surgery...so heads up. WLS induced redundant skin issues is NOT cosmetic surgery....if your ins. covered WLS....it more than likely covers some to all PS related to wls.

Wow, that sucks!

I have an HMO version under BCBS of IL and found that when I spoke to them, they were very difficult, evasive and uncooperative.  However, when I stepped back and left my PCP and surgeon's staff deal with them it went much better.  So, the key, I believe is having motivated people behind your to work the system.  Because, we are not usually equipped to speak the jargon and grease the wheels like they are.

In the meantime, I met with the surgeon's team, nurse, nutritionist and trainer and did my best to work on a traditional diet.  They also kept my spirits up and were my cheering squad as I struggled with my 300 + lb body, huge stomach and appetite while I began a new phase of my journey to an improved me.

I was blessed and within 6 months, I was approved and had my VSG.  Although I am a slow loser, due to my personal struggles with incorporating exercise into my life, I am pleased with where I am at.  And, I am looking forward to my continued advances in weight loss as well as reduction in medications and continued physical strength.

If you don't feel like your healthcare professionals are fighting for you, switch.  You deserve a strong, supportive team behind you!!!  Good luck and God bless.
