Can't eat what I prepare
VSG on 07/09/12
Hi y'all
I am 12 days post-op and have begun the pureed stage. I have soooooo much difficulty being able to eat anything that I prepare. For instance, I made some grits this morning with milk and a scrambled egg. I took 2 small bites and had to put it down. Tonight I pureed some ravoli and a little cheese, which I liked before surgery, but yuck!! It's as if nothing taste really good like it used to. In fact today, I'm having a hard time getting much of any protein in. I managed a Unjury vanilla shake this morning. All I can really get down is cold water. I crave it. I want to eat, but then when it comes down to the act, it's difficult. If I do get some down, I think I'm having some reflux or something. It's like it stops between my breast.

I would stick to soups, jello, mashed potato very liquidy and protein drinks. I was on fluids at this point. But if you need to eat, cottage cheese, yogurt, pudding, laughing cow cheese, don't rush the process your tummy is still healing. Taco bell beans and cheese are good and as yucky as it sounds underwood deviled ham. Chew chew chew eat slowly and try to put the fork down between bites. Good luck and don't give up it takes time.

Hi RockinMama,
I was still on full liquids 12 days out, so our timing is definitely different. However, I do have a few ideas for you that I used when I started purees.
First, remember that your new tummy may still be quite swollen, the nerves aren't healed, and it takes time for the entire process to heal. It's not easy, but we have to be patient at this point.
The ravioli sounds good -- did you remove most, or all, of the pasta part? The pasta, even pureed might be too hard on your new little tummy. I've seen that a lot of people have trouble with eggs early on, so you might be sensitive to them, too. I started with liquid egg whites and those were just fine.
Are you drinking close to before your meals and drinking soon after them? That could cause you some issues.
I use ricotta cheese with some pasta sauce on it, or with just a little mozzarella cheese (the ricotta cheese bake everyone talks about it good, too). I mix some unflavored protein powder in that........also in my cottage cheese -- it boosts the protein intake and doesn't seem to change the flavor of anything.
At this point, almost 4 weeks out, I can barely eat 1/4 cup of anything at one sitting. It takes me forever to eat that..............20 minutes at least. Chewing everything to near liquid state is important. And really, the big issue is getting a minimum of 64 ounces of fluid. Protein is important, too, of course. My surgeon and nutritionist told me for the first 2 weeks, fluids were first and protein second. After those 2 weeks, it was equally important to get the fluids and protein. It's not easy when you can't eat much at one sitting, but it is doable.
I wish you lots of luck in finding what works for you and still meets your food plan. You can do it -- just be kind to yourself.

Well, I feel better at least I'm not alone. My surgery was 7/9/12 also. Really the only things that I am able to eat without feeling it in the back of my throat is Cottage cheese, yogurt, popsicles etc. I have tried meats several different ways but it feels like it is in the back of my throat for 2 hours and I feel stuffed even with < 1/2 cup total. My shakes are going well. I think I'm going to stick with cottage cheese and yogurt for a while.
