OT-ish: Fingernails

I have bitten my fingernails for my entire life, and they've been thin and flaky. When I would try to grow them, they would peel and tear off. I have noticed after 11 months of vitamins (including 5000 mcg biotin) that they have become tougher and tougher, and growing really fast. Anyone else noticed this? I've stopped biting them (afraid I'll hurt my teeth!) and am just filing them back and keeping them nice and short. But much more attractive!!

Happy, that is great!

I have bitten my nails since a kid and it is horrible, I want to stop but can't seem to do it...I've had times where I stop for awhile and they grow some & then they break & are flaky and I pick at them....I don't know how I stopped when I did...I have put fake nails on from time to time, but they are so high maintenance.

The biting really hurts my teeth and jaw (I have severe TMJD)

Maybe I need to be more consistent w/ the biotin, and up the dose, I was only doing 1000 mg, when I took it....

Thanks for sharing!

Gel nail polish - seriously.  Give it a try.  It also helps to keep them from breaking off (as it makes the nails effectively thicker).

I have been a nailbiter my entire life, just about.  I have managed to quit, and I'll tell you how.  My habit is determined enough to bite through polish ... but not the new gel/shellac polish that they have.  It's the only thing I don't bite through!  My nails are finally grown out and healthy looking - yay!

Hi Happy, now that you mention it, my nails look nicer too. The only 2 times post op when they peeled & chipped was when I put those Sally Hanson sticker type polish on them. I loved those!!! I has the leopard ones once & the nude/black lace print & they lasted two weeks but they did a job on my nails when I removed that polish for some reason. Now I prefer to keep them well manicured & even painted when I have the time.

This is gonna sound strange, but my finger nails have always been fairly strong. My toe nails, however, I could not get to grow if my life depended on it! I used to always have nail techs comment on how small my toe nails were lol.

They're still tiny, but they seem to hold shape better since I've been taking my vitamins. And they do at least get longer than they did... oh, and they don't point upwards as much as they used to. I actually look like I have pretty much normal toes now

I was on a "nail board' for a couple years before wls, and that got me taking 5000mcg biotin a day. I had the same peelies, and thin bendy nails. The biotin makes your nails much thicker, and subsequently for a while I got really, really hooked (and good!) at giving myself manicures.. I have a nail polish collection that is kinda extreme!

so yep- it's the biotin! It never did much for my hair, but my nails like it!

hey another great benefit of vsg! could be the additional protein you are getting too.

go get a manicure once in a while. its such a fun treat!!  feels good to be pampered. Men should do this too.
