Reflections One Week Post Op
Here I am, one week on the other side of VSG surgery. Honestly, in all the time I spent researching and reading about the procedure it seemed like a far-off thing, a thing that would never actually happen. Now that the soreness is abating and things are starting to seem almost normal again, there are moments of the day that I find myself reminding myself that yes, the surgery did happen and change is happening, too.
I seem to be doing pretty well. Thanks to a good supply of Isopure, I've kept my protein intake between 80-100 grams a day since I got home from the hospital. I do not seem to like the taste of water or most Crystal Light flavors, but iced herbal tea has been keeping me very hydrated. Started full liquids last night with about a quarter cup of Thai tomato coconut soup. It felt okay going down (slowly!) and tasted so unbelievably good. I've had a couple of homemade protein shakes made with skim milk, protein powder and PB2 since then and so far so good. So that is nice. My incisions are healing well, my soreness gets better daily, and walking has been just fine. I'm a stay-at-home-mom, so our routines are requiring some creative retooling while I'm recovering. It has been hard not to be able to pick up or play hard with my two-year-old but I know this healing time will seem like no time at all by the time it's over.
In addition to losing 17 pounds since my pre-op diet, I have had a couple small NSVs already. My favorite tee shirt now fits looser around the waist/belly than it used to, which makes a comfy shirt even more comfy. And I've had a pair of too-small bikini-style undies in my drawer for a while and when I grabbed them by accident I figured "What the heck" and put them on. Lo and behold, my belly stays in them now. That did prompt a happy dance, I can not lie.
Two not as fun things that I had read other people talk about and that have been true for me are a) hiccups hurt a lot more than seems polite and b) I can no longer trust farts (sorry, TMI.) Hopefully both will be a fairly temporary condition. The hiccup**** me almost every time I stand up. The farts, well, liquid in, liquid out I suppose. And I do guess it beats constipation. So there's your bright side.
I am tracking everything on My Fitness Pal. My username is TSinNC, if you'd like to be friends. It's nice to see how other folks are doing.
Hope everyone is having a fabulous Thursday so far!
