Friend hasn't lost much...

My best friend had bypass 11months ago. She has lost 25 pounds. She keeps saying the weight will all fall off soon. I don't think so. She eats candy all the time and can eat the same size meal as anyone else. In fact, we had pizza the other night and I was full on two pieces and she ate four!

Planning to have my sleeve next month...waiting on insurance now. I am trying to learn by her example that it is not magic. You have to work the program.

It's SUCH a cliche, but I'll say it anyway...

Stomach surgery doesn't fix your head. If you aren't willing to do the head work, then no amount of surgery is going to fix your head issues. I know. I have head issues. A LOT of them, in fact.

Stick to your program and you'll do fine.

The honeymoon period is about 6 months . Most of your weight will come off then . After that 6-8 month period it gets harder - if she hasn't lost much weight at that point she is probably not going to lose unless she really changes something. At around2 yrs with the malabsorption of calories will stop. She will probably gain that 25 lbs she has lost as she hasn't changed her eating. She is deluding herself.

I tried that a few weeks ago, and you know what? It didn't taste nearly as good as I remembered. After 2 bites I went and got something else to eat. It was weird.

There's a myth out there that WLS is the magic bullet that will cure obesity. There IS no cure, but the surgery can do one magical thing if we're willing to do our part. It will help us feel satisfied with MUCH smaller portions.

That's a problem, especially with new Sleevers, who hunt for the mysterious "full" feeling. What they should actually be looking for is the much more useful "enough" feeling, then enjoying the lack of overwhelming physical hunger most of us used to struggle with.

Weight doesn't "fall off" any more than it "fell on." We have to eat very small portions of nutrient dense food, so as to nourish our bodies while eating less calories than our bodies need to maintain their weight. That takes work, commitment and time. There is no magic.

I do NOT understand how your friend can eat 4 slices of pizza with gastric bypass in ONE SITTING unless she has already stretched out her stoma! How in the hell is that possible? And candy all day? Oh my...please suggest she go back to her surgeon and also to a therapist. Something is not right both with her surgery and her mind.

We met for dinner tonight at a local buffet. She had two plates of food then cheesecake, cookies, a cupcake and half of my carrot cake.

She is almost 11 months out from her bypass and exercises every day. She's lost a total of 25 pounds. She drinks diet cokes all day long.

It is her life, her journey, her choice, but I am watching and learning. When I have the sleeve surgery, I hope that her example will help me stay on track.

I just feel so bad that her surgery hasn't been the wake up call I hoped it would be.
