Husband 4 days post op. Woozie? Normal?

My husband is 4 days post op from VSG and hiatal hernia repair.  He has had a wonderful recovery all things considered.  He is on track for 64 oz of fluid today and 60 grams of protein.

My question.  Sometimes when he tries to get up from a chair (I help pull him up), he will get really light headed and woozie, a little nauseated, and have to sit back down.  Starts sweating a little bit and his eyes watering.  He said he isn't really in pain, it just hits him sometimes.  We had just returned from a walk in the back alley, we were just coming into the house and it hit him.  It has happened about 3 times today.   Just wanted to make sure this is normal!

Thanks for all of your input!  I read here soooo much, but I don't post alot.  I have learned so much from this website during my husbands preop.  It has been invaluable!

Does he have a glucometer? Low blood sugar?  Perhaps low blood pressure?  Is he on meds?  Perhaps they need to be adjusted?

He does not have a glucometer :(  He is still taking 1 percocet every 4 hours.  I was thinking tomorrow we would try tylenol instead and see if that helps.  I was thinking it was from pain meds and lingering anesthesia.  Once it passes within 5 minutes, he is perfectly fine.  Weird :(

Orthostatic hypotension!

If it feels good, do it!  And if it smells good, eat it!

He's already gettin 64 oz of fluids in him....what kind of fluids. and he's already getting 60 grams of protein ...in what form? .

After an episode does he test? ...if he has a BP monitor..check it out...9 times outta 10 I betcha.....it is NOT orthostatic hypotension, nor is it low blood sugar!! ....CHECK THEM ELECTROLYTES!!   potassium, bicarbonate, sodium, chloride ..maybe even magnesium!! sumthin!

precursor to dehydration. Water does have a little bit of sodium but not enough for post op recovery... I would really push them G2's or..zero sports drinks...pedilyte/popsicles (baby food section) or electrolyte popscicles (Walgreens brand pedilyte pops)  semi melt..go down much easier.  As many as much as he can tolerate.

Make slushies/Ice cubes spoon it in or suck on em!

Reason for slushies/cold  that icey is great for nausea and reducin internal swelling and inflammation  throat n incision line....whilst ya get them electrolytes in too!  Two birds...  Same principles behind ice chips in the hospital.

Can't tolerate icey.....well can do room temp or even heat up those G2's  to warm ...just get em in!  He won't experience that light headedness no mo.  So important to get those electrolytes in him...and keep gettin em in throughout.  Much better than plain water, or Crystal light type water flavorers post op

Im not bein a smarty pants...I had symptoms of "orthostatic hypotension" still do once in a great while.

Bein a former diabetic & hypertensive....I have all the gadgets to test....and test I did....always normal ..post op ...IT WAS never my blood sugar, it was never my blood pressure..

The very few occasions I get it now ..like bendin down then up to fast ...n woozie....I know my sodium is too low!  ...slug down a G2 maybe..n Im right as rain.

Go easy huh!  increase walking incrementally everyday...do not overdo today to be undone tomorrow!!  SLOWIN IT DOWN a notch is OK!!

Hang in there n keep on with that walkin!!

I can't exactly remember why, but my nurse covered this in our pre-surgery class. It's very common from what they said. They cautioned us to take our time from switching from lying to sitting to standing positions. Just take it slow.
