Last night I met with my surgeon for my initial consult and also spoke with the insurance rep. What I thought would be a six month wait (at least****il surgery was scheduled has turned into maybe 2 months. I am a teacher and was planning to have the surgery over the summer months. Now I am looking at scheduling a date in mid to late January. What amount of time should I plan on being out of work? any info would help

I've been told by my nurse practitioner that the hospital stay is 2 days and the stay at home recovery period is 2 weeks.  I'm sure every doctor has a different time period so you should ask your surgeon.

It differs for everyone. One person I know felt well enough to go back in as little as 5 days. I could not have done that. I took 1 month off and felt I could have gone back in 3 weeks. Some people feel strong enough to go back sooner.  I know the wait for surgery won't be as long as expected, but is there any reason you can't stick with your plan to do this over the summer? You would have more time to get accustomed to your new eating habits. I was thankful for the time to do that more than anything. It takes some getting used to and planning to be successful.

I am learning so much on here... thanks MIMI for the thoughts about waiting. I may have to wait simply due to not being able to lift anything over 10 lbs. I teach pre-k so 15 4 and 5 year olds would have to understand why I can't pull them into my lap or pick them up when they are hurt. I feel like I need to get this done to better serve myself and others but having this kind of road block is frustrating.

I had a very rough time right after surg. I'm almost 3 wks out and thankfully I don't work or have kids! I get pretty tired just after going grocery shopping. Not having to lay down and nap anymore though. If i do too much my stomach hurts (pulls internally behind the biggest incision). Everyone is different! Just (more) stuff to think about. Best wishes.

I had my initial consult in June.  Talk to the patient advocate.  She told me I had up to a year after approval to schedule the surgery.  I am having mine on 12/5 to take advantage of extra time off for the holidays.

I had my surgery on 11/7 at 8am. I was home on 11/8 by 1pm. and I am back at work and feel 95% like my normal self on 11/13. Of course I work in IT and spend most of my day in my office and not runing around so that helps.
