Carbs vs Fiber Carbs

Yes, but remember, protein comes first.  I did not start doing this until I could get enough protein through my main meals.  So with that very important caveat....

1) I make a broccoli slaw that has tremendous amounts of fiber. The recipe is on my blog.  Or you could just eat the sliced broccoli dipped in Greek yogurt with some lemon juice, salt, and dill.

2) Brussels sprouts made with a little olive oil and bacon bits.

3) Artichoke dipped in same Greek yogurt

4) Cabbage slaw, have recipe on my blog

5) Radishes

6) Parsnip fries, I think I have the recipe on my blog.  If I don't let me know, I will put it there.

I could go on and on and on....

Guess its time to go pilfer your blog again. I have never had a parsnip, guess its time to try one. I guess I never really think of frying stuff, but its a really good idea.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Hey, I think you learned that trick from me.  So give credit where credit is due.  :)

Of course it could be that I learned it from you, I am not really all that sure now....

The bottom line is that this is exactly what I do too.  I get all of my protein from the main meals and use veggies as snacks.  I was only able to do this when I could get enough protein from the main meals and not before about six months out.  Early out, I had to do the Miralax to stay regular.

Oops....... Did I get that from you????

It's getting blurry......

They are not all wrong, they are just not detailed about it.  Some of the fiber should not be counted, but packages do not differentiate between the two types of fiber so you really don't know how many carbs that are labeled as fiber are really carbs that your body will use.  I find it safer to not count them during the weight loss phase.

Here is a pretty accurate description of what I am talking about by a scientist that looked into it for his own needs.  It is probably more detailed than most of us need, but it is a great explanation of both the benefits and problems of just not counting fiber.

If someone has a criticism, I would love to read it.  I love learning something new, but this more or less supports my own research into this area.

Where are you finding corn bran? I'm always interested in new sources of real food fibre.

One thing my dietitian told me that was a bit of a wake up is that the inulin that many products add to increase their fibre content doesn't do all the good things real fibre does. Yes, it's fibre, but what our bodies need is the real fibre in real food - vegetables, fruit, whole grains, All Bran, flax meal etc. So much for fibre enriched everything, huh?

I don't worry about my total carb intake anymore, although it isn't especially high. If my protein and fibre intake are where they need to be and my calories (the currency of weight loss or gain) are at about 800 my body has no choice but to use my fat stores. The advantages of eating high protein/ low carb are that it depresses the appetite and increases satiety since dense, low carb protein digests slowly. Since I have very little hunger and make a point of NOT eating until "full" I don't need those particular advantages.

I read about it and found a  couple places online that sell it. I had never heard of it before, but it makes sense.

I'm definitely intrigued with 1 caveat. I think you'd be wise to eat it in smaller servings spread through your day rather than all at once to avoid worsening the bowel problem you're working to solve, since it will soak up all available liquid. If you spread it out I think it's worth giving it a shot! (And tell us how you do)

Haven't read the whole thread, but careful with fiber. Fiber causes bulking. If you are constipated, you want stool softeners - Miralax and Colace are both softeners and are NOT habit forming.

Of course, talk to your doctor, yadda yadda.

I'm a pretty extreme case. I've had issues even before surgery and even had an anal fissure repair surgery (THAT sucked). I do Miralax once per day, a dose of Fibersure and 2 Colace per day. That's the ONLY thing that keeps me going. It's all approved by the various doctors in my life. LOL BUT don't go taking that much... just start with Miralax if I were you. It's super gentle.
