You HAVE to get your Head Straight!
Some of you may know who Chris Powell is, he is on a show called Extreme Makeovers Weight Loss addition. Several years ago he helped a kid lose over 400 lbs through diet and exercise. He was over 650lbs when he started and he got down around 250 or something. Today he is back up to 500 lbs. His reason is basically he never dealt with the reasons he was eating in the first place.
This is heartbreaking because through the eariler videos you really want him to succeed and he does then he ****** it all away.
New people, please, please, please do not take your time with your therapists lightly. Deal with WHY you are eating the way you are. Some of the reasons are not easy to deal with, but if you deal with them you will be successful, if you don't you will be posting here in a year about why you are gaining back what you lost. VSG does not fix your head only makes your stomach smaller. You may not know what your issues are, then you need to spend a lot more time with your therapist. If you know what your issues are talk about them don't be shy. Get them on the table and beat the hell out of them. I would be willing to bet we all eat or have eaten to be comforted for one reason or another. Find out why you needed comforting because you will fail if you don't.
Here is the video:
This scares me.. and I know it should. I find myself all the time sitting at nigh****ching TV after a long day, and then the gym, and I'm relaxing thinking... I need a snack.. and then I sit and think about it, really think, and realize I'm not hungry at all, it's mindless eating, boredom that is telling me to eat.
You're so right, your head has to be in the game!
I was thinking about him the other day. I remember when he lost his weight... and when he regained it back. So, I went to look how he's doing today. Not so good... looks like he's still struggling and he fell in the shower and broke his leg pretty badly :(

That is sad. Hope he can find a successful way forward.
Mine are automatic eating while reading/watching TV, eating my anger, and comforting my sadness with food. Also impulse control probably related to my ADD. One time when I lost weight in high school I would find myself habitually buying vending machine crap and then throwing it in the trash because, hey, remember you are trying to lose weight?
I would never use the Shrink that dose the Eval for them either. But, they have a therapist that had a RNY and is great. Unfortunately they are trying to push her out. They are pushing a Nut that took a couple classes and doesn't have a clue about the Fat Mind.
I wouldn't know how to find one other than word of mouth.
Bariatric surgeons do specialize in WLS and a good program will include a psychological evaluation and a few therapy sessions to make sure you can cope with the new lifestyle. However I think many docs just blow through this because of the insurance requirements and I don't think the patients take it seriously. You didn't get fat because you were right in the head. If you were right in the head you could easily rationalize that eating that way is bad for you. You need to find out why you eat like you eat and how you can cope with those feelings afterward.
I figured out that I had a food addiction and now I cope with that addiction by reading and posting here, reading and evaluating recipes, obsessively reading about health and nutrition. I am not sure it is the best way to cope but it feels healthy right now. I am planning with meeting with a therapist soon to find other ways.
Amen My friend!!!!
To all those who "poo-poo" this gospel...please heed the warning !!!
Going to a therapist doesn't mean sitting in room and just chatting. When Keith says to get the issues on the table and "beat the hell out of them"...that's REAL IMPORTANT STUFF!!! You can't just settle for the " I eat because I'm lonely/bored....I eat because I'm nervous...I eat because..." You have to work with your therapist to get to the WHY'S!!!!! WHY does being lonely make you go to the food...is it because of where your thoughts go when your lonely/bored? WHY?? Do your thoughts take you to someplace in your life unsettling? WHY is this place unsettling? etc...your therapist should help you walk these paths to get to real roots...otherwise...it's just words.
The triggers will ALWAYS be there...the food will ALWAYS be there...and we need to arm ourselves with the tools to fight! You use a hammer to hammer nails...and a screwdriver to turn screws. If you don't know what you need to to do...you don't know which tool to use. ( Is this making sense? it does in MY head)
Great advice!! Scary story!
Thanks Keith!!!!!
