Simulated.......Stuff
A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. Its marketing hype. I disagree with what you are saying here. Just because Acme Food Corp calls it a Double Triple Chocolate Chip Eclair Coffee Frappachino shake, if it is 40 grams of protein and 5 carbs it works. Who cares what its called.
Low carb, fat free muffins are not cupcakes, cup cakes are cup cakes loaded with sugar and fat.
If eating these things helps someone stay on the path to a healthy weight, then yes its a good path. As long as most of your calories come from whole foods.
I know you are not saying we should put some unflavored protein into a glass of water and that should be our lot because we were fat once. The reality is companies have to add flavoring and sweeteners to this crap because it tastes like...well crap.
Coming from someone (me) that is 14 months post-surgery, and still in the losing phase, I agree with Frisco on this.
Hindesight being 20/20, I wish I would have saved "trying new things" for after I reached my goal. I have a very small capacity (1.5 ounces of protein and maybe a few bites of veggies is a full, very full meal for me), and I used it as an excuse to introduce things that caused me to not be as focused on my goals. I've spent months getting rid of protein bars over and over.
I've been 2 weeks without them and I'm pretty damn proud of myself (thank you edelu for listening to my constant banter with myself about the protein bars).
I understand that at some point I have to live and I have allowed myself many, many "vacations" from my eating regiment. But, I also know that at the end of the day, IF I am totally honest with myself, I want to reach my weight goal.
So, to the newbies, tunnel vision is not necessarily a bad thing. All of the things you want to try will still be there for you when you reach your goal weight. If you choose to live first, and you don't reach your goal, when you start pointing fingers, check to see how many are pointing back at yourself.
JMO of course.

I don't have a problem with low carb-calorie-fat etc. versions of foods. I think the issue is when you're trying to use these items to eat as you did pre-op, with the same mindset, but instead with these new substitutions. I eat way healthier now (about 95% of the time), mostly lean protein and veggies, but if I'm going to eat something outside of that spectrum it makes more sense to me to eat a version that's not going to sabotage my weight loss. If they were celery flavored milk shakes would you think the same thing? I think it's just as much about why you're eating something as it is what you're eating.
