The general consensus (do some online research) is that VSG is the only WLS that allows for safe occasional use of NSAIDs. That was a big part of my choice to go with VSG rather than one of the others, since I have arthritis, chronic bursitis and sciatica that would wake me in the night with searing pain that only high doses of NSAIDs helped.

Happily, with the weight loss that the VSG has helped me achieve I rarely need pain meds of any kind anymore. I am so blessed. I still take comfort in knowing that if I truly need it I can take NSAIDs (with food to avoid nausea) rather than having to move up to narcotic drugs.

NSAIDs don't directly damage your stomach, but rather thin the protective mucus lining of the stomach (topical NSAIDs do the exact same thing) which is why a person with a bypass or band can't have them. A well healed sleeve has the same level of protective mucus as a whole stomach, and doesn't have either a band irritating it or a direct (and often sensitive) link to the small intestine.

I'm not you and don't know your medical history or any other issues you have that may make it impossible to have NSAIDs, but that's my experience and decision. (And both my surgeon and GP are on board)

Ah, NO. The DS (duodenal switch) has the same stomach as the VSG, and has been around a lot longer. Perfectly okay to take NSAIDs with the DS.

I read in an older wls book that there are protective drugs that you can take with nsaids  to protect your stomach , and some doctors proscribe them the ryn patients
