I'm one month out and I am so nauseated by the thought, smell and look of food. For the past few days, I have been forcing myself to eat but today I just can't. I have only had water today and feel stuffed just from that. I tried to eat a piece of deli meat but the smell of it made me gag and i just couldnt put it in my mouth. The only thing I can think of to eat that doesn't make me gag are saltine crackers but I won't eat those. Meat and protein shakes sound so horrible. Any suggestions?

I go through phases like this from time to time... Usually when I am losing weight through any method it happens more often.

I have been known to go back to old standbys like an egg white omelet with wilted spinach & cheese (babybel light grated on top, & 1/4 cup of 1% cottage cheese melted by putting a lid over it while it finishes cooking), hummus (I found a low fat one), chili, soup with unflavoured protein powder blended into it, pasta less lasagna (I can share the recipe if you think it would work).

Have you thought about taking some anti-nausea medication just to get something into you?

Can you still stand the smell of coffee? If so... put a bit of coffee (beans or unused grounds) into a small cup. Keep it by you and sniff the cup when you get a scent stuck up your nose. Not sure why this cuts all other smells but it does.

Coffee grounds is a really good idea. That may help with my nausea because ever since the surgery smells are magnified 100 times! I may try to pick up some Emetrol (I think that's the name) for nausea. I am slowly eat a tbsp of peanut butter right now so I won't pass out. I just cleaned my house and felt like I was gonna fall out! Thanks so much for the help!

I totally get it 100%. The thing is I had this before surgery so for me it is considered "normal" by my husband and daughter who try anything they can think of to help me get past it. before surgery it would be once every couple weeks. Since it is about 2 days out of 5...

You just learned a big lesson though. NO strenuous activity until after you've eaten if you are having a day like this. I actually tend to take a nap and things are sometimes better on waking.

I know this is carbs, but you are in the healing stage. Make some instant mashed potatoes and put a little plain protein powder in them.  Your body is telling you something, you need to listen.  Don't be afraid to nibble on a few salteens.  Not eating is probably making your more nauseous.  Maybe a little applesauce too.

Warm tea might help with the nausea too.

OMGosh.  I am 11 days post op and am having a very difficult time getting food down.  I can get soup down but that's about it.  My protein shake I can get about half of it down and then start feeling nausiated.  I can't drink all the water I'm supposed to.  I'm very concerned.  Don't like anything sweet anymore which can be a good thing in the future but right now my protein shake is thick and sweet.  I like the idea of putting protein powder in mashed potatoes.  Next week I can start stage 3 foods so I'll try that.  I am craving eggs and cottage cheese.  Can't wait to have some.

Thanks Mary and Cindy for ur replies! I had a little bit of a cut up potato wedge with a chicken hot dog for dinner. That stayed down pretty well. Hot tea is another good idea, I need to try and drink that in the mornings and maybe it will settle my tummy.

It is really hard to get my liquids and protein in right now. Cindy, I am exactly the same with the sweets and protein shakes as u. All the ready to drink shakes are horrible now. And thought of sweets right now makes me nauseated... Along with most everything else. Lol

I agree - all of the ready to drink protein drinks BLOW!!!   I got a magic bullet and my fave drink is the carnation sugar free chocolate mix, I only drink one a day....I'm just about 3 weeks post op and can eat alot of different stuff now just not alot of it.  I'm slowly coming out of my depression, and I bought the vitamin b12 tablets last night at GNC for energy. I'm the exact opposite, I wish I was naseauted by the sight of food, I'm constantly hungry, my stomach growls all the time, well, the stomach I don't have, makes noises like pop rocks in my throat!! lol

Glad you were able to eat something tonight!
