Met with NUT today - wants lots of calories...

I'm starting on my 4th week post-op - on 2nd week of soft foods and doing good - the most calories I've eaten is 800 - the past few days has been more in the 600 calorie range.  On a 14 day stall. Doing My Fitness Pal. Hubby got his sleeve yesterday and came home tonight.  Yeah!

The NUT wants me to eat 1300 calories a day.  I'm female, 5'1" and 209 - walking 25-30 minutes a day.   I was thinking the range was 600-800.  No way I can eat that much now.

I was shocked at what she said - it seemed like she wanted me to eat is what I would have eaten on a normal healthy dieting regime before surgery.

I know you vets must get tired of answering these questions over and over again about calories and do not want to tell us to go against our NUT.  My gut instinct is to stay in the 600-800 range and concentrate on getting my protein in, carbs low and lots of water.

Thanks for your advise.

Yay for your hubby!!

That does seem like an awful lot. That's more of a maintenance range if you ask me. My NUT told me to stay below 800 for as long as I could to keep the weight loss going. I have a feeling of what the vets will say, but I'll let them say it.

At a little over one year out, I don't generally eat even 1000 calories a day.....I wonder how knowledgable some NUTS are in regards to VSG...

I'm almost 2 yrs out and eat 1300 a day.

At 4 weeks out?

Ask her what the patient success rate is.

Stay with 600-800, more toward the lower end.
Mine wanted more calories too & so did my personal trainer. I got discouraged & quit trying.
Don't make the mistake I did. Listen to the vets here.

this type of advice seems more geared to people who have had RNY or the switch.  VSG doesnt have malabsorption like those.  1300 seems like a goal when at maintenance, not when needing to lsoe.

I am five months out and even on my really bad days I don't think I have ever broken the 1000 cals ceiling. I would have to eat some very calorie dense stuff to go over 1000. It is very true what everyone says about how hard it is to reduce after you have added calories and the weight loss stalls. Better to stay in the 800 range as long as you are losing.

At four weeks our program moved to 800-1000 calories.  Did you question the 1300?  Last year I was able to lose 60 pound doing 1200 with a daily work out but, I'm closer to 5'6" and started at 260.

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

I am not shocked.  There are many NUTS now that are telling people to eat around 1200-1500 calories almost from the start.  Ask them what they expect to see in terms of percentage of weight loss.  I would also not be surprised if they expect you to lose around 60-70%EWL.  I have stopped answering most posts like this one because I really do not have a dog in this fight.  I lose no matter what.  I have to choose between telling you to disregard the advice of a professional or I have to go against everything I know from my research, experience and my program.  All I can tell you is that on a weekly basis I get tons of PM's from people that are 6-8 months out that are not even close to goal having followed this program and they want to go back in time and do it differently.  On the other hand, there are some people that can make this program work.  They get very upset with me when I tell newbies that this might not work for them.  I can't really win here.   You are going to have to make a decision about whose advice is worth following, and I really don't envy you that position.  I know what I would do and I also know the success rate of the program I follow.  I feel blessed to have had a definitive program that made sense to me that I knew was designed to get me to the goal weight that I wanted to get to with as little difficulty as possible.  The program gave me everything it promised to give me and I hope that whatever you decide to do leads you to your goal.  Good luck to you and I might suggest doing some reading on this board of all different points of view to make your best decision.

I'd like to know what specific regimen you have followed. I'm scheduled to be sleeved on April 3rd and want all the help I can get. My surgeon does not require a two week protein liquid diet. IYO is this best?  I was scheduled initially, for the DS, but have changed my mind - see my most recent post and blog post for the why of change of heart. Since tomorrow is two weeks from my surgery date, I would like your suggestions for these next two weeks.

humbly submitted....Susie
