The Skinny on Obesity

Dr. Robert Lustig (pediatric endocrinologist) is now nationally lobbying for sugar controls.  He was interviewed on NPR radio about his latest book:  Fat Chance

He's been involved in this for a long time.  Here are some videos from 2009 called Sugar: The Bitter Truth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM

and some easier to understand (less scientific) and shorter ones can be found here:

I'd LOVE to hear what you all think since it really makes so much sense to me!  This sounds like it is a very scary health issue and one in which big companies are making too much money to care about our resulting health issues!!!  They won't stop using and marketing these addictive and toxic products to the public!  The only people who seem to disagree are the scientists who work FOR the corn growers association!!  omg!

New York Times covered it too:  http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/17/magazine/mag-17Sugar-t.html?pagewanted=all

and I've found Harvard and Yale and USC studies that verify Dr. Lustig's info!

Maybe Bloomberg was right with the Big Gulp!  Someone needs to try to help protect us if the FDA is allowing us to be fed toxic stuff!

Final thought:  Did you know that a Yoplait yogurt is marketed as healthful and yet it has the same sugar as a bowl of Lucky Charms Cereal???

Personally, I do not believe that good choices/behaviors can be legislated; nor, should they be. I am all for education initiatives and incentives for stores to carry healthy food options.

We had a very similar discussion here a few weeks ago.....I will try to remember the title and link to it later.

People need to be held accountable for their own actions. If you eat crap everyday you're bound to get fat. If people feed their children junk food & processed foods all of the time than their children are bound to be fat. No one forced the food into my mouth or anyone else's mouth. It's as simple as 2+2, well I shouldn't say that because some people don't even know what that adds up to.

I won't blame the FDA either. When people go grocery shopping they have a wide variety of choices. They just need to start making better choices. Ignorance is no excuse, I'm so sick & tired of people using it as one. "I didn't know" or "It's all I could afford." I call BS! The world needs to stop being SO lazy & open their eyes.

Like I said before, it's called looking at the labels and personal responsibility. My kids can eat sugar (the oldest actually needs sugar and caffeine for her conditions), and not have a problem. I will continue to buy the "big gulp" cups, I just don't put soda in them.

We definitely live in the "blame everyone but me" society.

I am tired of living in my nanny state too......personal responsibility is at the core of it all.

I just think that things are getting out of hand with everyone trying to control or regulate everything. There's so many politics that get thrown around. How about we just try to be good people, not scam artists, and own up to what is ours!

Great points, every one of you!!!  I totally agree that we need to each be responsible for our own selves.

My biggest concern is the HIDDEN stuff that is not being required to be put on labels.  IT IS ACTUALLY BEING HIDDEN FROM US-- ON PURPOSE!! (see NYTIMES article, link above)  No one wants to hear this, but so many credible organizations (for example, YALE. & PRINCETON and USC) have validated this is actually happening and it IS making us sick!

My next biggest concern is that NO ONE ****il this guy) is showing the public that high fructose corn syrup is actually ADDICTIVE and TOXIC to HUMANS!   If this is actually true, why is it not forbidden?  Super question!  Maybe becasue The Corn Growers' Association has more money than individuals... Maybe because this is hidden in so much of our food BECAUSE it is addictive, and there's too much money at risk!!!

PLEASE watch these videos or read the book!!  I didn't mean to make it sound like someone else should control what we have a right to choose to put into our bodies, but by that same point, BIG business should not have the right to hide dangerous substances in our food and get away with it!!!

Just listen to this interview and be informed before you make your own decisions.  THEN please comment!  I can't wait to hear!

The Fallacies of FAT:  National Public Radio interview January 11, 2013  http://www.npr.org/2013/01/11/169144853/the-fallacies-of-fat

"In his new book Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease, endocrinologist and obesity doc Robert Lustig deconstructs the mythology of fat. He says exercise, for all its benefits, won't help you shed pounds—and that fasting only worsens weight gain."
