Disappointed with my GP

I asked about blood work and tests and surgeon said I was fine, didn't need them. GP also said I didn't need them. NUT said I didn't need them...is this just HK silliness? Does everyone have labs done?

Currently 180 - 76 lbs lost! Surgery 11/7/12, 36 years old, 5'8". I live in Hong Kong and it's a bit different here!

I was at six months when  my surgeon ordered my first labs, and he will order more when I see him soon (one year).  I can't imagine not doing labs.  I've seen some people post here about severe deficiencies that showed up in their labs.

Standard practice is to have bloodwork at 3 months, 6 months, a year and then every year thereafter. How would they know if you were developing a deficiency if they don't monitor trends?

I ran into the exact same thing, except mine was for pre-op testing.  My PCP looked at me like I was crazy and said "Does it really matter???"  and then when I tried to explain why the tests were needed for a baseline, he said it again.  He made me call my surgeon's office to get a comprehensive list and acted as if he were put out.  When I told my surgeon, he agreed that I should find a new PCP that takes my health and this surgery seriously.

...and I was a big fan of my PCP up until that point.

I know...it feels so disappointing that I don't know if I would trust him for anything other than a common cold from now on. I think that I need to find a new one regardless of the tests now. Bummer because he is such a nice man and parking was easy around his practice...

I'm sorry you're having to struggle with that, Julia.  It sounds as if you have some strategies to try to overcome his lack of cooperation, though.  Keep us posted.
