Is it OK to drink coffee with almond milk, no protein powder?
Well, I'm actually a Decaf person, I don't drink a lot of real coffee. I just ordered online the Chike Decaf Mocha. But, how much of a cardinal sin is it to just have a cup of Steamed Unsweetened Almond Milk and Decaf Coffee as a snack? For instance, I had a Quest bar about 40 minutes ago....waiting to drink liquids...now, I am going to have hot Decaf with Almond milk. Is this a No-No??? SHould I quit this practice???
I drink coffee on a daily basis. Sometimes I steam protein into it other days I drink it without protein. I frequently use unsweetened almond milk with 5g protein or a light vanilla soy milk. I am careful to be sure that I drink extra water to counteract the diuretic effects of the caffeine (which doesn't sound like an issue since you drink decaf) and make sure that my carb count is in check on days that I use light soy milk since the carbs are higher than they are in my almond milk. I also use a sugar free coffee syrup to flavor it. I'm almost 10 months out.
My surgeon actually recommends no coffee for the rest of my life but that has been difficult for me. Sugar is a huge trigger for me so I have to avoid it but coffee doesn't cause me to crave or want unhealthy things. If I was going for sugar laden coffee on a daily basis (like I used to have pre-surgery) that would be a very different story. So that's my take on it... I'm curious what others will say.
ETA: I waited about 4 months post surgery before I started drinking coffee again.
I have an awesome little machine that one of my MFP friends helped me get at a great price called Mr. Coffee Cafe Latte. I put my almond milk, sugar free coffee syrup and protein in the bottom portion of the machine and the machine steams and froths the almond milk while the coffee brews into it. The protein blends in very nicely. I've been using it daily since I got it and it's saved me a lot on coffee!
I also discovered a while back that Starbucks has protein that you can blend into your coffee. I don't get cold, blended drinks anymore because of the sugar but you can add protein to those. Instead, I ask them to steam the protein into hot coffee when I get it and it turns out smooth and creamy. If they don't steam it in, it will be a nasty, clumpy mess but if they steam it in it's wonderful! I usually get 2 scoops of protein (each scoop has 15 g of protein and only 30 calories per scoop) in a sugar free soy vanilla latte.
OMG...i just looked at this machine on amazon....I think i HAVE to have it!!! how wonderful!! and thank you so much for the Starbucks info....i had no idea they did protein, and could steam it in! I could hug you!!

As long as your stomach can tolerate it, I don't see a problem with it . I was much further out, before I drank any coffee, but many people start out early. I started having skinny lattes, when I was 4 months out. I just included it, in my food plan for the day. Enjoy, as long as your stomach can tolerate it.
I drink coffee (decaf) daily and a lot of it. I use sugar free cream in each cup and don't sweat it. I would rather be sparse in other areas for calories. It was actually less calories for me to heat 8 ounces of flax milk, coffee, sugar free Torani salted caramel then it was to use my cream. (25 calories for a cup of amazing- so worth it. Now, I have to go make me one.)
