How much time do you recommend taking off from work?

As much as you need:)  I had surgery on a Wed.- went back to work two and a half weeks later- 2-3 weeks seems "average"

I have a desk job as a secretary...had my surgery on 4/24/13 and went back to work on 4/29/13 (5 days later). If your job permits you to take more time off then do it. Extra days are always better, but in my line of work I felt perfectly fine to go back to work. Everybody reacts differently to the surgery so ultimately it's your call as to when you feel ready to go back.

I had my surgery on a Wednesday and went back to work the following Wednesday.  I teach preschool and I was fine; just didn't lift anyone.

I teach also, and am wondering, were you okay to stand all day and teach?  I am having surgery next month and have to teach a workshop to adults not too long afterward.  Just curious if I'll be able to do that without wiping myself out!

I work half days and I can sit as needed throughout the day. If you don't have any complications with your surgery and you can take breaks to sit periodically you should be fine. I had an unexpected hiatal hernia repaired during my surgery that I think made my recovery a bit slower. Just keep in mind that everyone recovers at a different rate. I had no comorbities, so I'm sure that helps. I am now at almost three weeks out and feeling great but still wiped out at the end of the day. Good luck!!

My doctor wants me to stay out for 4 weeks at a minimum.  I was thinking about 3 weeks (I teach, too).  We are going to go at it next week!  I"ll let you know who wins.

I am one week post op and could prolly go back to work now. I am taking two weeks though. I am a sales manager, so I sit and interact with staff and customers. I have very little pain.
