Dairy is definitely a no no on paleo. Other than the occasional yogurt I don't eat a lot of dairy. I have to find out if whey isolate counts as dairy since whey comes from dairy.

Glad you like my posts. I will update when I finish my research.

Not hating here, but I do have a question: Why is it that you want to gain muscle while still in WL mode? I completely understand wanting to maintain muscle mass and tone and strengthen while losing weight. However, what I don't quite get is when you still have 50 pounds to lose how do you plan to gain muscle and still lose fat? Gaining muscle weight requires extra calories, while losing weight requires a deprivation of calories. So is your goal to sort of stay where you are weight wise and just be muscular as hell? I remember reading several papers about it being virtually impossible to gain muscle mass while in calorie deprivation.

Perhaps I'm not seeing something here. Help me out. Thanks.

The two are not mutually exclusive. You are right in that building muscle takes not calories. It is also hard to gain muscle when you have less body fat so I am going to take advantage of this last 50lbs to spur the effort while I still have it. More muscle burns more calories. If I can add 20lbs of muscle and lose 50lbs of fat I will be a beast. I am not adding more calories just yet or if I do it will be 100 or so to my 600-800/ day. I am exercising twice a day.

I don't subscribe to the whole wait for maintenance ideal. I think you need to adjust your program to meet your goals. I lost a lot of muscle early in my program and I would like it back.

I agree with you on making your program work to meet your goals. Too bad that you lost a bunch of muscle early out. I believe I was lucky in that area. I started working out pretty early out in my program. I don't think I lost much muscle mass at all and I know I have gained muscle since being in maintenance.

I find it to be a delicate bit of a dance though. If you can handle it during the WL mode, more power to you. Me, I had to wait until I was where I wanted to be and then went from there. So, actually maybe not too different at all. Just different places of "wanting to be".

I will be interested to follow how you do with this endeavor. As you know, the whole fitness thing is of great interest to me. I'm more about less body fat and definition than bulk, but my body seems to like to be a bit on the bulky side, so I"m getting more muscular than I had envisioned. Frankly, it's pretty cool. My arms are better than they ever have been.

Been thinking about it as well.  Will have to do more research.  But I am gluten free and feel so much better over the last year.  I have Crohn's Disease and it has made a world of difference to get gluten out of my diet.  I sadly, have been eating some popcorn and corn chips, which I can so tell have caused inflammation in my system.  Time to get those out, no nutritional value, empty calories.

Let us know what you decide and why.

Just got my test back from my naturopathic doctor, I am (somewhat) allergic to dairy and eggs - now what?  Oh no....meat makes me queasy.

Vegetarian and legumes sound like pretty much all that's left. How are you with fish and seafood?

Interesting article I just stumbled upon. http://www.phoenixhelix.com/2013/05/13/i-wish-i-could-be-primal/

If you look at the Whole9 website, you'll see people who have been cured of allergies. Obviously, not the case for everyone, but worth a try...

I started primal just after my one year surgiversary, I needed a better eating plan to get to my goal. I was primal for about 9 mo and did great. Then I got lax and gained back 10 lbs. I'm now back at it for the past 2 months, but more so paleo than primal. I do eat Greek yogurt and protein shakes, not 100 percent paleo, I know. I am working out more and doing heavy weightlifting so I wanted to keep my protein level high. I just can't eat enough dense protein to keep my protein high enough without adding a shake. I highly recommend paleo or primal, very healthy, and it works for me. If you want to seriously add muscle you have to lift HEAVY and eat enough calories.

My goal is to be paleo by 6 months post op.  I still rely on yogurt and cheese to get in my protein this early out.  We gradually phased out grains before surgery and will keep making small changes.
