I found out today at the preop  testing that I have Hypothyroidism.  I was hoping that when you lose weight, it might go away, but after reading about it, I don't think so... I hate this it had to rear it's ugly head before surgery.  We have this in the family with my mom and brother so I don't know why its a surprise.  Anyone else out there taking medicine for this?

Yup!  Taking meds for many years.  Thank goodness it was discovered.  You're likely going to feel soooo much better once you start on the meds.  HOWEVER, it is not a death sentence for weight loss. And you can get some healing with proper nutrition.  I also have Hashimoto's ( thyroid views itself as a foreign object and attacks itself).

Look up Mary Shomon online.  She has a lot of great info on Hypothyroidism.

Good luck!!!

Thanks ParisGirl!!! I will look up Mary Shomon right after I get off here, thanks for the lead!!  I guess I was just disappointed in having to take another medicine, I'm on a preventative for migraines and have to take extra stuff when I have a bad one, so I don't want to take any more, but things could be much worse, and you are right, I'm glad it was discovered, could of led into many things I don't want.  Thanks again!

Hi. Yes, my VSG surgery (June 4) was brought about by hypothyroidism. My thyroid was removed in 2009 but not before I had gained 85 pounds. I would never be mistaken for Gwynneth Paltrow - I always had an extra 30-ish pounds - but nothing like what  I have been through since 2004. After struggling for a year to lose 40 of those, I had to get a new Endo *****duced my Synthroid, and I gained it right back. I am counting on the VSG because I cannot eat more than 800 calories and hope to lose weight and keep it off. I am also in the market for a new Endo.

Don't despair. In January I was 267 lbs; a week before surgery I was at 252; now I am at 234. It is difficult, especially if I do not exercise each day.  Nonetheless, it is the best hope I have right now.

Good luck. Search for an Endo you love - it is NOT easy to find a good Endo, and I would recommend going to a couple of them before settling on one. One hint: many Endocrinologists specialize in diabetes. You need a thyroid/Hashimoto (maybe) person. I have not had the best luck dealing with those who specialize in diabetes. I am on Endo #6. I loved #5 but she moved.

If you put the whole word "who", and follow it by the next two letters (re), you get a word that is censored by OH, unless you tell it to stop censoring your words.

I suspected as much, so when I reposted I put two rather than one spaces between the words. :)

Hello Rastafas, thanks for the response!  Do you think that the synthroid definitely made you gain weight (UGHH).  I will definitely look into an endcronologist with specialty in thyroid (and don't you hate when the good doctors move!!!!!).  Thanks again for the much needed advice.

It is not my understanding that synthroid makes you gain weight. Weight gain comes with Hypothyroidism for most people. The Synthroid should help you lose or maintain. I had no medications until after my thyroid was removed. I have had to fight for decent medical care from Endocrinology departments.

Synthroid doesn't make you gain. LACK of synthroid (thyroxin) makes you gain weight.
