What to say at work?

Just tell them you're having a sex change operation!  That usually shuts them up.

If it feels good, do it!  And if it smells good, eat it!

My husband told his boss he was having elective surgery and that he'd need certain days off. Boss said "You know you get sick days for that, right? Come see me."

When boss looked all curious (he isn't allowed to actually ask) hubby told him it was personal, and that was that. He did mention that it was laparoscopic, and went home early his first few days back, but that was the total of information shared.

A nice point - a few days after he returned to work his team had a BBQ for lunch, and he told them to not cook anything for him. They'd noticed that he was just on liquids and made him jello. Nice bunch.

Yes, tell them you're having surgery.  But you will get to a point that your weight loss is very noticeable and people will start asking what you're doing.  For me, I couldn't just say that I'm exercising and eating better.  I've told everyone the truth.  Everyone has been positive (at least to my face!).  I've worked with a lot of of these co-workers for up to 14 years so they know me pretty well.  That's just my two cents.  Good luck with your surgery and enjoy the journey.  You won't regret it.

I faced that situation last Friday.  I have been on the fence about what to say if anything.  I sent out the calendar showing my 3 weeks off and a note saying I was having surgery.  No one came to me and asked but I decided to tell a small group what I was doing.  They were all very supportive and willing to help out where ever they could.  It was a load off my shoulders.  They now know why I choose not to join their Biggest Loser contest that starts today.  I will have an unfair advantage.  :)

I chose to lie about my surgery. I told everyone except my closest friends that I was having a hernia removed, which actually happened. I felt this surgery was personal and something I would rather keep to myself.
