My one night hospital stay turned into two....

Hi guys, had surgery yesterday. Surgery went well, but was kept in recovery for 3 1/2 hours due to tachycardia and possible leak. It was horrible. I was throwing up except nothing came up horrible pain etc. Just not even close to what I imagined. Anyway today I've had trouble with nausea with eating, keeping pain controlled and horrible gas pains in my left shoulder/chest. I've been walking like crazy and this may be TMI, but I've tried sitting on the toilet to pass gas which helps a little. Its like it doesn't know which way to escape and I can only push so hard in order to try and pass gass. Anyway they are keeping me an extra night, and other suggestions for getting rid of gas?

the only thing that gets rid of the gas is walking and time

my surgeon keeps everyone for 2 or more nights , with tachycardia and a possible leak it is much safer to stay the extra day

 hope you feel better soon

 welcome to the losers bench

I'm sorry you're having this trouble.  I agree with walking and trying to get the gas to move out however it will go.  Defintitely not TMI for this crowd of BTDTs.  :)  Hang in there!

I had horrible nausea that fed off the gas.  Every time I burped, I got the dry heaves, which was downright painful!  While I wasn't overly happy about having to stay 2 nights, (I missed my kids) I am very thankful that I did.  They threw everything but the kitchen sink at me to get rid of the nausea!  All you can do is walk, walk, walk, burp and pass gas.  I think it took me a full week before I finally felt like it was all gone.

Don't worry so much about the eating right now.  In the hospital, I could only get in me half or less of a popsickle.  The broths they served were entirely way too salty for me.

I was in horrible pain and my dr asked if I wanted to stay that 2nd night. I am glad that I did because my pain lasted for over ten days but got a little better every day.

I'm glad that your surgery is over and done with! I'm sorry you are having difficulties and praying that things will get better for you. I was sleeved a 8 days ago and have a had a rough time. Thankfully no complications just ALOT of pain and nausea. I started mushies yesterday and that seemed to really help with nausea. I know this doesn't sound like much and I keep rolling my eyes when people say it to me, but it will get better. Good Luck and keep us updated on your progress. I think the extra night is definitely a good idea. 2 nights is standard for my surgeon.

My Dr. keeps everyone for 2 days. I'm scheduled to have a barium swallow x-ray the day after my surgery, to check for leaks. This is one of the many reasons I chose VSG and this surgeon. Just seems like he takes every safety check I could want. I am a bit nervous of gas pain considering I have had limited mobility from my stroke walking it out may be difficult.

What your feeling is normal. Youve just had major surgery. Staying in the hospital two nights is the min for my Dr's office.  They need to make sure you can hold 4 oz in an hour before they let you go.  Its for your safety.  Anesthesia is horrible for me as well.  I threw up black ugly stuff the 1st time, yuck! Then just had dry heaves the next day.  All is normal.  I am only 1 month post op and I feel better than I have in years already.  Keep positive and keep walking even if you dont feel like it.  I hated it too.

Never say, never - It always seems to bite you in the butt later......
