Be Careful Around Old Diabetics

I attended a Jewish dinner this evening for the jewish new year and two of the people at the dinner were diabetic so there were special foods and particularly desserts for them. So I ate some chicken (even though its hard for me to keep it down). I had some asparagus and some salad. A perfect dinner for us VSGers. I felt pretty good about it. I had some lemon water with it and I enjoyed a length contest between the two diabetics about their various meds and doctor experiences. Thanking god I dodged that bullet with my VSG I got up to socialize a bit before getting out of dodge. Now one of the wives of of one of the diabetics pulls out the ice cream cake. I start sweating but politely decline the invitation and she says, oh its sugar free this and sugar free that and the ice cream is no sugar added. I was like "SCORE!" so being comfortable full from dinner i said I would have a small piece and then I made her cut that in half. So we are not talking about much food at all. About a bite or two of this ice cream cake that had some sort of sugar free ice cream sandwich on the bottom and some no sugar added butter pecan ice cream on top, drizzled with sugar free chocolate. It was delicious. I mean seriously one of the best things I have tasted since my surgery. Well I am not sure it was quite as sugar free as advertised because I am ready go gnaw my freaking arm off. There were definitely some bad fast digesting carbs. I don't think it hurt me much as I happened to be pretty low carb today so I think I am fine except for whatever happened to trigger me. Oh well. Yet another lesson learned at 11 months post-op.

My son is a type 1 diabetic.   He and I went to nutrition counseling when he was young.   One thing they made a point of was the fact that "a carb is a carb" whether or not it has sugar in it.   They actually told him he could have real sugar but we needed to be aware it was a carb and count those carbs as part of his daily allowance.   And some carbs affect you differently.   Possibly there was white flour somewhere in the cake part of that ice cream cake!

Lol!  As a former diabetic I used to tell people "look at TOTAL CARBS!"  some of the "no sugar added"  or "sugar free" foods only save you 2-3 carbs.. some have the same amount!  ...it is a BS marketing ploy...look at total carbs when reading labels.
