The Hardest Week Yet

Last week my dad had some health issues and my mom asked me to come help out.  So I did.  I've been in PA with my parents since Friday evening and I just got home this evening (Wednesday).  I love helping my parents out when they need me and I love being able to, but this week trip was hard.  My parents are both worried and scared, my dad is angry, and I was not well prepared for being out of my normal routine.  (My dad was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer last fall, so I've been up there a lot since then to help out during chemo weeks.)

The bad: Aside from the aforementioned emotional stuff.  My dad snacks a lot and it's really triggery for me.  So I ate crackers a few times with him.  Only a few, but I definitely had willpower issues.  I also had scale issues - or the lack thereof - so I haven't been able to weigh myself since last Friday.  I ordered a scale for their house, but I'm an idiot and forgot to change the shipping address, so it went to my house instead.  Grr. I'll have it for next time at least.  It's been hard for me to be out of my routine, eating crackers, and have no scale.  I'm positive that I've gained a billion pounds and I'm starting to dread weighing myself tomorrow.  Feeling like this is horrible.  I slept miserably while I was away too.  Sigh.  It was just a very challenging trip all around.

The good: There was some good.  My mom has always been a pretty active person and she has always wanted me to go for walks with her but I never have because I knew that it would be miserable.  I'd need to stop, I'd slow her down, I'd die, etc.  But while I was there this time she suggested that we go for a walk together and I said yes!  I think she almost had a heart attack.  And we went for a walk Sunday night and I could keep up with her!  And I didn't need to stop!  And I didn't die!  And it was amazing!  So we did it again on Monday and Tuesday night!  Close to 2.5 miles each night in about 53 minutes (with hills).  I feel like this has caused my relationship with my mom to level up.  She's so happy that I can walk with her and I think it was the highlight of her week as well as mine.  She told me about a billion times each day how successful I am, how great I look, and how awesome I'm doing - she's pretty freaking proud of me.

And now I'm home until next Wednesday when I need to go back for a few days.  But first I'm going to sleep for 12 hours and try to get some sort of normality back in my life.  Keep your fingers crossed for me tomorrow morning when I'll be stepping on the scale.

I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad. You sound like a great daughter for them to have around and that you have wonderful parents. I can imagine your Dad's health takes a toll emotionally. If just having a few crackers was all you had I'm sure you did fine with all that exercise. Don't be so hard on yourself and tomorrow whatever the scale says know that either way you have already succeeded at losing weight.

Good luck tomorrow I am rooting for you!

I'm so sorry your dad is having health issues. I'm sure they are so thankful to have you to help. As far as the scale goes I'm sure you did better than you think. I think we are our own worst critic. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you though.

Gwen I'm so sorry to hear about your dad!!!! But I'm also so happy that you and your Mom had that bonding time walking.... that's awesome... don't beat your self up about the crackers and stuff.... it happens... but Tuesday night make sure you pack your new scale for your trip back!!! So you won't order another one to be sent to your house.... lol that's so funny I'm 100% positive I'd do the same thing!!!! Good luck tomorrow on the scale I'm sure everything will be fine!!! :-)

Thank you so much.  It's been rough since last fall.  I was juggling all of my pre-op stuff with my dad's chemo every 3 weeks.  But my parents were SUPER supportive, which made everything easier than it could have been.  This trip was especially challenging since it was a total last minute thing.  (And I only own 5 pairs of underwear that fit, lol.)

The scale took pity on me and I was down 1.9 lb!

So sorry to hear about your dad. I'm sure all that walking was true therapy for your mom.

Don't let a few crackers take away from any time and memories with your family/dad. I'm sure it was meaningful to him to share something with you.

Hope you catch up on your rest. You're a great daughter!

Thank you very much.  A good night of sleep in my own bed helped a lot. I feel more human today!
