Coffee :(
So my NUT said I could drink decaf coffee. I got up this morning and made a cup. Ewww! I don't know if I made it too strong or what, but it tastes awful to me now

My tastes were so wacky right after surgery - there's a lot of stuff I tried early on that I haaaaated but is ok now. I would wait a bit and then try it again. Starbucks iced coffee with cream and splenda is my saving grace, haha. But I didn't start drinking coffee again until about 4 months post-op.
My NUT advised against caffeinated coffee/espresso, but didn't forbid it, for the first few months post-op because the caffeine can exacerbate acid reflux issues and could contribute to dehydration. If we drink coffee, it doesn't "count" toward our fluid totals because of the dehydration effect. I drink it just about every day now (starting at 4 months post-op or so) and have had no ill effects. There's also the whole "drinking your calories" deal, but I don't worry about that right now because, even with the cream in my coffee, I still rarely go over 800 calories/day.
Also, the best thing ever: mixing a chocolate Premier protein shake with 6oz or so of iced coffee. Yum!
I was told at my health class that caffeine and alcohol must be avoided if you have the RNY to minimize the risk of serious ulcers. VSG do not have the same risks, but it is still recommended that we minimize the intake. I was told to limit one cup per day of caffeine and drink alcohol only occasionally (special events).
Thanks, I will wait and try it further on because I used to really enjoy a cup after dinner.
My NUT told me that she doesn't like us to drink any coffee until about six months out because it can be rough on our tummies. But she said caffeinated coffee is a diuretic and can aid in dehydration for those who are not getting in all their water.
