Am I doing it wrong?
That's what boggles my mind - the people who think that their way is the right way for everyone. We're all just muddling through and finding what works for us, right? :)

I don't think there's any one "right" way to "do this." But I found I had to pay attention to mental patterns I was developing through the process. For me, if I was exercising for the joy of it, for the way it made me feel, for taking good care of myself, that was fine. If I found myself exercising to compensate for my calorie intake, or to try to reach goal weight faster, that was a pretty big caution flag. I was also concerned about building a good base of strong habits before getting into a temporary training program for a particular event that would require a higher calorie intake short-term. I didn't want to accustom myself to food patterns to support, say, half-marathon training, because I was concerned about my ability to cut back to "normal" consumption after the event.
I have just one more question, and it's purely rhetorical... why do you let yourself be so concerned with what this person thinks is "right" or wrong, and why are you looking to us to tell you? I know I'm prone to being too focused on what others think, and too reluctant to trust myself, or my medical team. Part of the process for me is learning to build up my own ability to analyze what I'm doing and whether it's productive growth or whether I'm heading off in a wrong direction. I'm not there yet, but I'm working on it.
I think it's because exercise still just feels like totally new and uncharted territory to me and I'm trying to figure out things as I go along. So.. maybe I am doing it wrong, I don't know!
But I know I'm not doing it wrong, because I'm happy and healthy - the things that matter :)
