If you have a dilated esophagus and you over fill your sleeve with food you will vomit.

A cortisone injection is fairly short acting and will not effect your weight loss.

I found the idiotic things people said at the classes very eye opening. And how many of the participants who toted quart size cups of surgery soda to the classes mind boggling. My favorite was the guy you explained how, when you want a full size meal you just need to drink with it so you can wa**** down to fit more food into your sleeve... His wife was sleeved 5 months ago and that's what she does... Yep.

It was mostly a "now NOT too" class. But I took so much away from it.

However the psychologist, PT and nutritionist where all helpful to me at our individual appointments. The pre op class was how I learned to access their services. I see the psychologist once a month and PT every 8 weeks.

Gwen, I hope that some of the people your PCP gives your info to reach out. But please keep in mind that you can help but you aren't response for anyone but yourself.

The bariatric clinic at my hospital has a ~80% "success" rate at 2 years and ~40% at 5 years. And that is a huge improvement over 10-15 years ago.

My surgeon has (unscientificly) observed that people who "yoyo" seem to do better in the long run that those who have been obese for a long time.

It seems counter intuitive, since we yoyo dieters have repeatedly regained, but as I thought about it I realized that we are really good at losing and now we have a tool that will help us not to regain. I am thinking of suggesting a research grant.

Topic: RE: Do you eat out?

I take meals from home unless I have a lunch meeting, or a dinner meeting or a breakfast meeting and my husband loves t o try restaurants.

So, I eat out a lot. Maybe 8-10 times a week. I finish my water or tea while we wait for the food. I usually get an appetizer or a child's /senior plate and ask for a take home container as soon as the food arrives. I take anything more than I can eat (4oz), plus anything that I don't eat (white food), off the plate before I start eating. our kid or our dogs eat the leftovers.

I confess to enjoying some of my husband's desert (a 1"x1 cube) and a (very****asionally 1/2 of a pre dinner ****tail.

I inadvertently took a few sips of wine during dinner and it didn't take much to make me barf up my entire meal. I tested this with water and the same thing happened. Gross.

Didn't need to try it a third time.

Topic: RE: Those who got to normal weight what was your start weight please and how long did it take ?

Your surgeons goal is b asked on "average" weight loss. I started at 293lbs, weighed 273lbs on my surgery date and weighed 193 today. That's already 20 pounds less than my surgeon's "goal" of 80 pounds in one year. But it's less weight than many people here lose in 8 months.

In January Old Navy had some great sales and I got 14 pieces of clothing for under $100.00 all size large or 16. At that point I could not imagine ever wearing a size smaller. It was my fantasy size...I

I fit into a size 16 at the end on May, The size large tops I got at Old Navy a month ago are huge on me already. I need to buy size medium now.

You can decide not the be "average" but do make reachable goals for yourself. They are not set in stone. Once you reach your doctor's goal all you can reevaluate and readjust. Good luck!

Topic: RE: is liquids more important than food early out?

If you are eating four times you have plenty of time to drink even allowing for the half hour wait after eating.

Carry your liquid around with you everywhere you go. Sip. Get your phone to ping every minute or two to remind you and sip again.

Logging your fluids might help motivation you to meet your goals.

Like many overweight people I never drank enough water. I had a hard time at first and found that flavored water was easier. After a few good weeks mixed with some bad ones that the more I drank the quicker the weight came off.

I drink at least 90 oz of water, usually more, every day now.

Yep, I would have done a happy dance if I had a bout of diarrhea those first few weeks!

Are you on a high protein low fat pre surgery diet ?

The post op diet isn't a suggestion it's a prescription. Every Dr has a different diet, it's important for the OP to follow the plan she was given.

I remember that I decided that I was completely insane for doing this to myself post op day four and I was even allowed to have protein shakes, cottage and yogurt and pudding!

The feeling went away in a few days and I've never had a moment's regret since.

I'm about 7 months post surgery. I still have good restriction and can only eat about 4oz at a time.

I am much more active. I'm starting to feel hungry more often and have to plan my whole days meals and stick to the plan to keep from going over what I am allowed. I have cravings (head hunger) more often too.

I think this is were the hard part starts...

Topic: RE: Pre Surgery Weight Loss Requirements?

Research has shown no correlation between successful pre surgery weight loss and post bariatric surgery out comes but many insurance companies still require it. Or at least an attempt. Bariatric surgeons should really know better.

My program only required people who start over 300lbs to lose weight pre op.

I had this surgery because I had to starve myself to lose even a pound a week. I am a very active person and was put on (and stuck too) a 1200 calories a day for 6 weeks and lost less than 3 pounds.

Not a urban legend. I worked in an OB GYN practice as a case manager, a weight loss of just 15% can trigger ovulation.

I went off BCP's because my Dr assured me that I was surely menopausal and refused to continue to prescribe them. I got pregnant at 48 after losing 80 pounds... Should have used the Dr for child support...

Topic: RE: Unflavored Unjury protein mix ideas - HELP!

The Unjury unflavored doesn't have much taste at all.

I don't like Sweet drinks. I mixed a few scoops with some water and added the equivalent of 10 grams of protein to just about everything. Yogurt, cottage cheese, almond milk, soup (not too hot, it clumps up).

A scoop in 8 oz of milk tastes exactly the same.

My Dr really encouraged me to have a by pass but I chose to have the sleeve. No regrets. I know I am losing weight slower but in the end I am losing it.

Good luck!

Now that I weigh almost 100 pounds less I don't need to have so much protein so I do ****asional) have oatmeal or a slice of toast or popcorn and even an occasional ****tail... I always measure or weigh.e

Despite this flagrant disregard to the "rules", my weight loss continues to be steady, slower that some, but usually 1-2 pounds a week.

There are no "BAD" foods.

I've lost 100+ pounds several times but my skin toned up on it's own until I past menopause and even now I notice that my arms are not a flabby as they were a month ago.

What happens depends on genetics and maybe luck. Taking care of your skin and keeping the muscles under your skin toned can't hurt.

Topic: RE: What about veggies (and fruits)?

I was not required to lose weight pre op and didn't have a pre op diet, but i ate non starchy veggies and meat for about 6 months.

Now I eat protein FIRST because sometimes I can only manage 2 oz. But I try to eat a variety of foods, though not much fruit or bread. About 1000 calories most days. On the days that I go to tri fit class AND row for 30 minutes I have 1200 calories.

Topic: RE: 4 weeks and violently vomiting for the first time

Getting spoilt fish in a restaurant is highly unlikely.

Raw salmon is quite dense but you had maybe 2oz...but Miso is very high is sodium so it pulls fluid into your digestive system. Maybe that was the problem?

I vomit every now and then, it's always at dinner time and usually what I eat has nothing to do with it. my stomach can hold 4oz so I weigh my food and have 3-3.5 oz.

I started to take an RX antacid half an hour before we eat dinner. It usually works.

Don't stress to much about one episode. If you vomit regularly you should see your surgeon to r/o problematic causes.

Topic: RE: Weight? The real measure or just convenience?

Interesting that you didn't get weight before surgery ... Do you ask why this is the way they do it? My clinic weighs at every visit, I guess I thought that was standard.

I weigh myself once a week for my weight loss challenge group as I find the daily fluctuations stressful. I also track my measurements.

But, yes, the numbers do matter and they will matter more once we get closer to our goal weights and the weight loss slows down...
