Soapy taste in mouth!

Hi there.  My son will be four months out as of tomorrow and everything has gone very well for him.  He is not losing as quickly as we thought but he is healthy and the scale is heading in the right direction so I am pleased.  He mentioned today that yesterday he started having a soapy taste in the back of his mouth and he had the same thing again today.  He said he tried brushing his teeth/tongue but it doesn't seem to make a difference.  He also has been very tired the past few days but he is 22 years old and still has his days and nights mixed up - doesn't work well when you have to be at work at 8:30 in the morning!  He has no idea what may be causing the soapy taste and I am guessing that it may be a vitamin deficiency.  He has not had any blood work done since surgery but it's getting close to that time.  Any ideas?  As always, thanks for your feedback.

It might be due to ketosis. When you lose weight rapidly you can go into a ketosis pahse. You get bad breath, bad taste in mouth, and awful body odor. Check with his surgeon to make sur that this is what it is. If it is, it will pass. I had a metallic taste for about 2 weeks. I brushed, rinsed and even sucked on SF mints. Nothing worked. Call first thing in the morning.

My days and nights were messed up too. Once I was off the pain meds I got back on track. That too will pass.

Tell him congrats and keep up the good work.

Thanks for the reply Nixie.  I have noticed the body odor as well so I bet you are right about ketosis.  If it doesn't pass soon, we will contact the surgeon.  Congrats on your weight loss!

I have noticed the same thing with myself. I also noticed that it happens about a half hour after I take my calcium suplements.  So, I have decided to brush my teeth after I take them. Sounds silly but I also brush my tounge, and then use mouthwash. Ever since doing that, it has helped.  I also drink a lot of water after that. I can't stand that soapy taste.  It is worth a try anyway. Or maybe try taking the calcium right when you get up before brushing his teeth. Take Care.

Thanks for the reply, Barbara.  Brushing teeth does not seem to help my son and I know he is not taking his calcium as regularly as he should :(  If it doesn't let up, we will contact the surgeon.  Sounds like you have your soapy taste under control - good luck to you!
